Before & After: Dated Dresser to Ombre Sideboard Young Nesters

First thing I have to say is I'm from Iowa and NEVER have I heard Kentucky being referred to as part of the Midwest. Someone explain please! And if you pay attention, each size category has a specified square footage range to qualify. Our 850 sq. foot apartment houses myself, my husband, a 3 year old and a 2 week old. :) It would be nice to see more families sharing smaller spaces on AP.

@MJS7640--exactly my thoughts! Another piece of crap people think they have to have for kids. I seriously wish my husband would let me get rid of our bouncer, swing, walker...what's the point of having a baby if you stick him in plastic chairs all day long? (Not that dear husband really does, I just think the few times we really use them don't justify storing them for 3 years! :P)

Composers stole motives from each other all the time; and it was a form of flattery. Some contemporary rappers do it as well--although most in poor taste, a few have gotten it right. For accessories, a knock-off purse is usually cheap, poor-quality and obviously fake. I'd rather save up for one I really, really love and use it for several years than waste my money on something that will fall apart after 6 months. Part of that is the American attitude (that I'm working to get away from) of NOW NOW NOW! We allow overseas companies to make cheap materials that don't last, and so we keep spending our money on things we don't really need, but keep replacing.

I agree with the dust part--I love the tissue poms that are so popular above cribs, but I cringe when I think about how dusty they'd get! There isn't really any way to clean them. At least if you put sweaters over these, you might be able to make them removable to wash.

@Ruthie-we co-slept, too. You can safely co-sleep, and it really helps everyone go back to sleep for night feedings. And we'll do it again with the one on the way!

Looks like I'm in the minority with this comment, but my husband and I have showered/bathed with our son (now 2) since he was little. We would do the bouncer sometimes while he was very young, because he would go back to sleep, but once mobile, it was much easier to take him in with us. I don't wash my hair everyday either-its healthier not to!

How's a New Mom Supposed to Get a Shower?

I love so see how many other mamas agree with me on this!!!! I get so much backlash from friends on FB and baby forums for letting people know ultrasounds are not proven safe. I don't think all these "ultrasound stores" should be legal at all, and now this kind of crap comes on the market. I can see how it could be VERY useful for professionals who attend homebirths, or for paramedics to use in emergencies, but it is seriously pathetic for this to be available to the public.

@Karla-I'm simply continuing the discussion and responding to those that feel compelled to criticize the project about the potential dangers when using glass with children. I didn't realize my comment about using common sense was competitive.

I think these are whimsical for adults to use to store their own craft items. Would look LOVELY on open shelving above little one's reach. Obviously, its your responsibility as an adult to decide the appropriate age for handling anything glass. Summed up? Duh.

I don't know if you're looking for different furniture ideas, but what we're planning to do, is have our DS who just turned 2 this summer, sleep in a loft bed, and have the convertible crib be underneath. My FIL is super at custom woodworking, and so he's going to build it, and have stairs on the side instead of ladder. This would save on floor space, and the loft bed would grow with either child. We don't know the sex of our peanut yet, I'm just 14 weeks, but we're in the same situation trying to figure out the shared-room thing.

@honeyhaze--ain't that the truth? My 2 year old loves my Nook as much as he does playing with a rock while he hangs out in the stroller on walks. He will probably have a Leapster later on, but I wonder because they always come out with new ones all the time and then you can't find any of the accessories. Right now, he's happy on the couch with his $2 magna doodle.

The Top 15 Must Have Toys According To Toys 'R' Us
9/25/11 9:40 AM

Its usually my in-laws-because they don't buy things my son NEEDS, its usually a toy when we come visit, or she comes to babysit for us. I know my husband was a little hellion growing up, and I don't want her to think its OK just because she did that with her son, or that because she's the "Grandma" that its fine, either. I let her know that its not his birthday, its not Christmas, he doesn't need it. Making sure you voice your opinion, and maybe saying what your kids really need is new shoes instead of a new toy can help. I also think saying this can be a "Grandma and Grandpa's house toy" and leave it there will sometimes work. Then its a little more special when kids go to visit the Grandparents, and they have toys that are different than what they have at home.

This article doesn't even address the "necessities" that everyone has it in their heads are a must. This is just a list of crap people invented to take advantage of idiot parents. No one even needs a crib for the first year if you co-sleep, and if I could do it again, I'd skip the crib altogether and just wait until our son was a toddler. The convertible cribs take up too much space. Bouncers, swings, and those ridiculous play centers are just more $100+ things a piece that keep an adult from actually holding and interacting with their own child. The Bumbo my sister got me? Maybe used 5 times. Baby monitors? Didn't use them ONCE except to make sure they worked. No need if your house is one level. Bottle and wipe warmers-also a waste. Baby gates help keep kids out of rooms for safety reasons, like kitchens where they could have severe accidents. Those ARE worth it.

Really don't like these. My in-laws have deer heads all over their living room, and I think they are so tacky. They're bedroom is decorated in a log-cabin theme...just not my thing, and yeah-that unicorn is creepy. I don't like things in a child's room that are too hokey, or won't grow up with them.

I'd say I'd probably regret it. I can't imagine giving away something so thoughtful from a family member. Wedding china, especially if it is something you treasure, should just be kept. There's nothing wrong with keeping it, and saving for your own set you picked out. It's a little different from getting a cheap set from Wal-Mart. It's Tiffany. Come on, woman! I am leaning toward a minimalist lifestyle lately-and if you have more than you need, don't use it, don't want it, don't like it--than obviously its just taking up space. But its definitely a decision not to be made lightly.

Mod Podge is great, and is very durable. Used on fabric, it makes a tough surface that can be cleaned with soap/water and not ruin the hard work you did. I'm not a fan of wood furniture, I prefer painted--it really has to be the right piece to leave as-is. I like the project (I also live in apartment) but the fabric choice was really busy. The table would look nice with a painted white top, and the rest left the original finish. In this case, if you can't paint, I would have went with a solid color top so its easier to switch up decor later.
