I'd do the lower. My bedroom in high school had that color wood trim and I painted three walls solid red and the fourth red with a white grid pattern (thank you trading spaces).

I suggest painting the wall around the windows red first and decide from there whether you want the entire room red or just one wall red.

A pop of color adds so much without being scary. Also, that light beige would probably be complementary to the bottom red.

@applemanju I think it is just so refreshing to come home from a trip to a clean house. Less stressful to return to a home that isn't a pigsty, even if it normally is. Sleeping in my own bed that was made before I left after a trip is so refreshing (even if I never make it any other time).

I got the original blueprints to my 1952 home. They still have the build slip attached. Black and white square/rectangle bathroom tile is original. And I am glad someone replaced the steel kitchen cabinets it originally came with. And every room had wallpaper, so glad I didn't have to remove it, but there is a piece of cowboy wallpaper visible under a vent in the spare bedroom that I think is neat.

Other than that, the old bag I bought it from just left her cigg tar and odor behind (she had owned it less than 2 years), as well as about 12 gallons of dried up paint in the garage.

I've sat on those kind of crates before and they're not stable enough for an adult to sit on without the plastic bending, no? I am not fat by any means, either.

Changing my dining room from the awful red it was to a deep vibrant blue was the best decision I ever made. I gaze into that room and make a happy sigh at least once a day. <3

Also, my kitchen is a lighter complementary shade of blue and it is gorgeous. I need to take pics...

Beautiful!

Add the yellow from the door on those rectangles on the staircase! I would just add a simple yellow outline to each rectangle. They're so neat--highlight them!

Also, you can get luxe (for target anyway) sheets and bedding in the Target reclaimation section of some Goodwills. I got a Thomas O'Brien duvet for $10 that was $80 at the store.

Worthfabrics.com usually has sales and you tend to get a better price if you order more. They sell both wholesale and to the public.

An Ikea rug would probably have a better pile than the one in your living room (looks like the hall runner I got at Garden Ridge for $45, which I love but it isn't as plush as I wish it were).

That being said, love the vintage flair meets uptown in this home!

@ach, The former red in my dining room made me angry but only because it was so hard to cover up!

This red looks great. I love the decorating style too, much validates my own organized chaos type of decorative narrative (i mean that as a compliment!).

Too many red suggestions! I am facing a similar dilemma with my chocolate brick house that already has red doors and shutters (as do three other house near me, one diagonal from mine). So boring on my street.

I am considering an antique purple and slate gray combo. I'd love a turqoise/slate/yellow front door on my own place but my architecture is more Asian 50s than your traditional.

All that to say, I'd do turqoise shutters/slate trim/vibrant, retro yellow front door.

Also, if the only reason you want the kitchen blue as well as the room it conjoins with is because you're afraid it will clash, complementary colors with a solid division line would look fabulous together, in my opinion. I'd need to see the two conjoining rooms to offer more suggestions though.

My dining room is very visible from both my kitchen and living room so I used three complementary colors (blue in the kitchen, darker blue and beige [divided by white chair rail] in the dining and the same beige in the living). White trim sections off each space.

What Color Should I Paint Kitchen Cabinets?
Good Questions

I disagree with the blue. My kitchen and dining rooms are both complementary shades of blue and it looks gorgeous. I do think blue will clash with the countertops though. I would second the gray suggestion, maybe a nice warm slate (with this color you wouldn't even need to change the cabinet color).

I would find a backsplash that you love and add that to the wall to bring your paint color and the countertops into unison.
