That's a lovely attitude to take towards (even hypothetically speaking) people who would take time out of their lives and pocketbook to buy gifts and spend an hour or so showering you with presents (and affection, I would think).

Hopefully, you won't be offered one and then you will be spared the horror of being given gifts that are "aesthetically pleasing and have continuity with my personal style".

The house and grounds pictured on here are actually lovely. This surprised me.

Portraits, pewter serving pieces, pottery, deep porches, green lawns and beds of aspidistra, camellias, cannas, daylilies, magnolias, leland cypresses--almost all "pass-alongs" from neighbors and family!

Wreaths on doors, family pass-down furniture, inherited china, formal dining rooms, clotheslines, produce from the "fruit stand" or a neighbors garden.

Quilts, heart pine, porch swings, Battenburg lace and homes filled with family and friends. I love the south!

Maybe you should hang your mirror lower--almost touching the top of the chest.

Two suggestions: spray in insulation, for one--I think you can even just have loose fiberglass blown in which would be great if access to the pipes is a necessity.

Secondly, this is kind of strange, but . . . . My mother in law wanted a cushioned floor in her guest room/sewing room, so she bought carpet padding and covered the floor with it, then used linoleum/vinyl over the top of it. It's very durable, easy to clean, cushy underfoot and insulatory. It's also inexpensive.

I still have mine--and some of my mothers: that's fifties, sixties and eighties--what a great idea! The 101 Dalmations is one of them and I think I'll be buying some record frames soon!

I use (per one cup) 1 TB Dr. Bronner's, and a couple of dashes of peppermint, tea tree and lavender oils. The smell is heavenly! I also mix up a batch and keep it in a spray bottle. When the messes are particularly large or the kids need refreshing, it works great!

I am posting without reading previous posts, but you could buy some very inexpensive roller blinds and paint them with glorious colors. During the day they would all but disappear and let the light in and at night they'd cover the dark caverns that windows can become. Plus, you'd have some really large-scale art to brighten up the room.
