My husband just returned from a business trip to Cambodia with a beautiful ikat scarf for me. Traditional Khmer ikat is more subtle than the pillows and whatnot that are in stores right now, and I love it! It doesn't scream Pottery Barn or any of the other North American decor stores. Most ikat artisans were killed by the Khmer Rouge, so ikat's resurging existence today is not just a symbol of beauty but of hope and strength. I'm in the midst of one right now! Today's exasperating phone call to Atlas Van Lines has a guy predicting (but not promising, of course!) that the shipment they picked up in Chicago the 13th *may* be here by the 9th - almost a month later. In between I've heard excuses such as: we couldn't find anyone to drive the truck, we didn't know where to deliver it, and we aren't sure where your car (that's also being shipped) is. Hmm...
