Your apartment is both humble and refined. Great colors, great art, great job hanging the art. Love the green bedroom. And I liked the orange painting a lot, but it's even cooler now that I know you did it yourself. Your home looks like you really live in it, from making cakes to hanging out. That's the finishing touch so many hyper decorated spaces lack - the lived in and loved vibe.

Thanks too for posting the names of artists - great choices. Your obsession has led you to some really fine pieces.

Your apartment got me back onto AT. Long ago, I lived in studios for a few years and when I got my first 4 room apartment I also put my bed in the living room - I also preferred the open space. So I love how you've purposed each room - perfect in each way. They all seem like you use them too- because what's the point of having extra rooms if they are not used? And your sculpture, pottery, paintings are so well chosen. Nothing seems picked just to fill a space or to "decorate", but that it is really appreciated. Extremely well done. I hope you get a house tour.

I think Bethany Nauert is an amazing photographer - I've always loved her work on this site.

Day 3.

"Don't make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful." - Shaker rule of thumb

I keep trying the site - I keep scrolling and scrolling and clicking on categories and scrolling some more. And I'm still doing the same as before the redo, and clicking and clicking through pictures. It seems I have more mouse work now, not less.

As I've said in other posts, I think things look good. The content is obviously still there. I'm just not finding it functional. As M. Good said, it's no longer intuitive and comfortable. I've been a steady visitor for about 5 years -reading a variety of things. But right now I think I will only check out the occasional house tour - you all do a good job with those. Be well and remember that commerce is more than the buying and selling of goods.

@marska - well said.

And I finally see it - the "saving the world . . ."

Maybe I'll get used to the rest - or I"ll finally "see" things.

But I will still be muttering about "main".

Thank you for this post. I wish it had come at the start of the day yesterday, but there are a lot of wishes in these comments, aren't there? I think the decision to emphasize the visual/photos was a good one, I love that the ads are on the side and I like the table of contents at top left. I also like your squiggly logo more prominent.

However, if "Main is not everything", why call it "main"?

I am one of the many who wish "main" was everything new and a true one stop place to look at all content. It's disconcerting to get so much repetition as I go to the different "channels"- the site doesn't seem fresh then. I liked how I found new ideas at AT all in one place. It is also taking too much time to visit multiple channels.

I get that the AT brand is king now, so all the other names had to go away. But I miss the fun of the other names. I miss seeing "saving the world, one room at a time". I like all the white, I like your signature orange, but I miss seeing other colors that went with the other sites. AT's heart to me is fun, quirky, layered, interesting, imaginative - it has depth. Now things seem are more antiseptic. And I don't mean the white, that's not the issue.

While I agree with you on the visuals being a focus, AT is also about ideas. The presentation now seems more like a reference site, rather than an inspiration site. I'll keep checkin though - as long as content provides inspiration, that's what really matters to me.

Well, at least you know how beloved the old format was. Which means AT is also beloved. I think we could get used to the changes. Sounds like readers also have some good ideas - would have been kind of cool to have solicited ideas beforehand to involve the community in the change. This is a site that started because of community to me. It was Maxwell's vision and exploring but also it was all the people who have volunteered their homes for house tours and all the people who are their audience, and all the questions and advice that go back and forth . . .

I think it does look brighter and I kind of like that. It also takes me awhile to process things, so I am taking a wait and see to know what I think about it all for the long term. Only a few visits will help me figure this out. Right now, I like that you kept the top tours and top posts. And I like the table of contents above those two categories.

That said, I'm also like Nitedula where I like to scroll down a blog. Also, I appreciated Katybelle naming AT's "quirkiness" and AT471003 naming ATs "warmth and whimsy". Those are qualities I like as well and they are not totally apparent to me yet. Just look at the names: Re-nest=green living, Ohdeedoh=Family, and Unplgged=Tech. Generic much? I get that you may have had your reasons, but Ohdeedo is much more fun to say.

If this redesign is an "AT cure" you did on the site, a post on the process would be interesting. People do cures on their homes to make it feel more like home to them, whatever that means to each person doing the cure. What makes the present choices (not the old format - I want more info on the new) feel more like home to the AT staff that this is the format that was chosen? I'm sure it was an involved and thoughtful process - we readers just didn't see/hear/read about any of that (unless I missed something along the way). Home cures take 8 weeks. The redesign people may have taken even more time. As readers, we are trying to digest this immediately without a cure process - so it makes sense to me that not everyone is happy.

All well said.

I take a cue from my dog - she is just as happy sleeping on the "nice" couch in the living room as the old, goofy one in the family room.

That said, I still want to do more with our house, and little by little (by little) we do. But when I look back on all the places we've lived, none of them were ever "finished" and I still liked living in all of them.

Now that's a true makeover. The proportions are great now, the artwork is great, the room is well edited and I love that charming little vase with the pink flowers.

Yes to your outdoor table! nice job! I dig your dining room and kitchen tables+chairs as well. They are all made to linger at a meal - they look cool and comfortable. Plus right on to making a commitment to buy art. I love the pieces in your dining room.
