I moved to Pittsburgh, PA last year from San Francisco. I love it here too! Housing prices are about 75% lower here. My costs dropped by about 30% because I bought a much bigger place than I had in SF. Property taxes are higher than CA, but since they're based on the much lower housing prices, it seems relatively cheap to me. Utility rates are lower, but because the weather is more extreme and I have a big house, I spend more per month. Groceries seem a bit higher here than in the Bay Area. Gas prices aren't much lower. The biggest difference by far is the cost of housing. I got an entire house for about the price of a down payment in SF. Salaries here are appx. 20% lower, but it varies by industry.

I would not recommend moving to a very small town or rural area if you need to find a decent paying job. I would recommend moving to a less expensive mid-size city or its close-in suburbs if you're trying to get away from a costly area like NYC, SF Bay Area, etc. You can have many of the same amenities and a decent quality of life at a much lower price.

So nice to finally see a piece that wasn't painted. Tired of seeing beautiful wood pieces "restored" with paint.

It was too yucky to drive this weekend so I watched football and drank hot chocolate mixed with coffee instead. Had a wonderful and relaxing Sunday.

I agree. I program my thermostat to increase the heat about an hour before I get up that way the house is warm and i want to get out from under the covers.

I'd like to see a before and after of a wood piece where the wood was restored instead of painted. She did a good job, I just prefer wood whenever possible.

I wouldn't have painted those beautiful old oak cabinets. I would have refinished them. That old oak came from old oak tress. You can't find wood like that anymore.

You're absolutely right, but many kitchens have cabinets that are not worth saving because they are in terrible condition. Refacing isn't all that cheap either.

Me too! It was so cool. I know that kind of detail is expensive to have done, but still.

Love what you've done with the place. I can totally relate to the cat hair problem. I have two dogs and three cats - a never ending fur factory.

I recently relocated from San Francisco to Pittsburgh. My new neighbors have been incredibly welcoming and friendly. It's a bit tough, but knocking on neighbors' doors to introduce yourself with a gift in hand (cookies, muffins...) will go a long way.

I'm planning to have a potluck in a month or two so my neighbors can see my remodeled home. I'm on a street of old homes and just about everyone I've met is renovating or has renovated their home. We're all curious to see what the others have done.

I'm very grateful to live on a street where people really take the time to get to know their neighbors.

Recently moved into and have been renovating a 113 year old home in Pittsburgh. It's my dream home. Moved here from the SF Bay Area. Could never have afforded it there. I love all the period details. Original subway tile, stained glass windows, old oak staircase... Most of all I love finally having enough space after living in tiny cramped houses for the past 20 plus years. And I love not spending anywhere near what I was spending to live in SF for about a third as much space.

I'd have preferred a bolder color scheme, or at least bolder art on the walls.

I love it. I just moved in to a new place. I'm using lots of color, but mine is downright tame compared to hers. I like her style.
