Professional reupholstery is expensive and is only worth it if the piece has good "bones" to begin with. You may want to get an estimate before you put a lot of energy into saving it until you can afford to redo it. How Can I Save This Ugly, Beat-Up Couch That I Love? Good Questions |

Some of my closest friends are the parents of my kids' friends. We met years ago when the kids were young. Have you extended invitations to any of your children's friends' parents? Have you extended an invitation to anyone in your new town? Invite someone to lunch or out for coffee. Have a housewarming and invite everyone you know in town. That's what I'm going to do when the remodeling's done on my place. People are always curious to see the new neighbor's home. I have no friends or family here. Moved across the country from the Bay Area too. Good luck! 10 Tried & True Tips: How to Make New Friends in a New City |

Great advice. I just moved across the country at age 56. I've been remodeling my house so I haven't had much time for a social life. I'm enjoying interacting with the contractor and all the tradespeople as well as the people at the lighting store, appliance store, etc. I have friendly neighbors too. Once the remodeling's done I plan to get out more. Lots of interest groups in my new hometown and I'm outgoing so I'm not worried. One of my best friends just moved to a new city and she loves music and dancing. She's been there a few months and already is playing in a 21 piece band. Tons of new friends and like me, she's in her mid 50s. 10 Tried & True Tips: How to Make New Friends in a New City |

Honestly, I like both. Depends on how/where it will be used. If I was keeping the "before" version, I would have changed the upholstery to something more subdued and traditional. I love the bright yellow in the "after" version. I just bought a grey rug with pops of bright yellow. I love mixing old and new. Don't know if other people "get" my style. It doesn't matter since I'm the one living with it. Before & After: A Wooden Bench Goes Bright |

Just left San Francisco for Pittsburgh, PA. Bought a 2700 sq. ft. historic home for about what I'd spend on rent in five years for my 1000 sq. ft. townhouse in SF. Love that they are preserving that wonderful house. The craftsmanship is superb. Decor is a little formal for my taste, but I agree that it's nice to have a break from MCM, rustic, eclectic in SF, LA, and Austin. Chris & Tyler's Sense of Stewardship House Tour |

Check Craigslist, garage sales, estate sales for vintage wardrobes. They tend to be made better than new ones. Better craftsmanship. Mid century modern is a popular style now so you'll pay more for those. If you happen to like other design styles you can find some incredible bargains. Denial works too. Last year I was losing my home to foreclosure and I simply put it out of mind as much as possible during the holidays. I had done everything I could to try to save my home and nothing worked. I wasn't going to let misfortune get the best of me. I spent time with family and friends and prepared to move on to a new phase of my life. My friends rock. They were there for me and my kids every step of the way. I really couldn't have gotten through it without their support. Making the Best of the Holidays … No Matter What! |
