I actually don't see this apartment as being super colorful. At least to me, it seems like a home full of neutrals. I'm not saying that's a bad thing at all - it's actually nice to see a neutral home that doesn't have white walls.

Though, of course, that bathroom is definitely colorful! And love the shower curtain - I have it myself!

I actually like the awkwardness of the small chair. It breaks up the symmetry of the room and makes it more inviting.

A Before & After Based On Your Advice

Antimacassars for hard-used couches are a must.

A friend has them on her couch and it's saved them from her husband who likes to sit down immediately after a day of work, grubby hands or not. When she has company over, she can just whip them off and her couch looks like new.

My boss's couch does not have them and the arms are so grubby and actually have holes from coworkers worrying a loose thread and then picking at the resulting hole. Awful.

If your couch doesn't come with them, buy some extra fabric or an extra pillow and have them made.

I'll add the height of the seat. Some people like a low-slung couch. Others like one that they don't fall into/have to haul themselves out of. This is a measurement that often isn't posted on websites (though I've figured it out by checking the height of the coffee table if it's paired with one) and definitely wouldn't be in a Craigslist ad.

Oh - and seat depth. That's important for the movie marathon vs. cocktail party considerations.

I think it looks great! And I bet the gaps at the top are not as noticeable in real life.

I like #9 the best - the stairs and shallow end aren't in the way of the lap section. So theoretically, someone could be hanging out by the stairs while someone else is doing laps.

Love all your comments!

The paint is Ralph Lauren Blue Island.

Behind the TV is a quilt my great-aunt made. My mom saw my living room and immediately said "you need this quilt" and she was right! The blue in it is even a match for the walls.

Oh - and I had to really hunt to get all of that. Think I went up and down the aisles of the same Marshall's a dozen times before I spotted it all. The bottom shelves are especially good for heavy stuff like glass sets.

Marshall's, Ross & the like are also great sources. My parties tend to be in the 15-20 people range so I bought a dozen wine glasses, a set of pretty crystal-ish 6 DOF and 6 highballs at Marshall's as well as a dozen square white appetizer plates (just like the ones at Crate & Barrel but cheaper). And since some folks have wine, some have beer (in bottles), some have eggnog, some have water I don't need to have 20 of each type of glass. It's never been a problem. Plus I always make sure to serve mostly food that doesn't need a plate so don't run out of those, either.

These tips are great no matter where you live. I live in a small town inside of a suburban mess inside of a megalopolis. There are days that I love it and there are days where I feel stranded in the middle of nowhere that's also in the middle of everywhere. Everyone can take advantage of reminding themselves why they love where they live.

Joseph - yes, I totally agree, they are too close to the ceiling. But hanging them too so long that I haven't had the heart to rehang them. Though seeing the pictures here is motivating me!

I totally get people not liking cowhide rugs - though I do love mine! And it's faux from Overstock.

tinyhands - my ceilings are not that high, it actually is pretty readable and tends to be the first thing people notice when they come into the house. I love that you recognized it! Mine is my dad's from Korea. He also crossed the International Date Line and my sister has that certificate.

Thanks so much both of you! Behind the TV is actually a quilt my great aunt made. It's all little pieces of silk, probably bits of dresses and ties.

I really hate the idea of being forced to take off my shoes at someone else's house. If it's a party, it's usually a sartorial reason. My shoes are part of my outfit. If it's just a normal visit, there could be a variety of reasons. No socks often means sweaty & stinky feet. And if it doesn't, my feet often get cold. If I am wearing socks, my feet do still get cold. Or I might just prefer to not slip around.

I guess I just don't get it. I get keeping your shoes off the furniture. But keep a mat by the front door so folks can wipe their feet and then just clean the floors every so often.

I agree with everyone who says it will work! I have a four-poster in my small bedroom and it's awesome. The posts keep the eye moving up so the ceiling doesn't seem as low - even though my bed almost touches the ceiling fan. Plus you notice the bed, not the size of the room. Big fan.

Good Questions

Yup, love green - especially a grassy, kelly green. I have green-patterned curtains and green-based pillows (not to mention the greens in my art) in my turquoise living room and it's really pretty!

I use my four-poster bed. The rails are narrow enough so a hanger fits over them - and that's now become my way of judging all other four-posters!

Overflow items go on a folding rack and over doors.

I do have a line out back, but it doesn't hold as much as I'd like it to and I always forget to do laundry until late at night. I have also put my folding rack outside.

I have a wallpapered ceiling in my powder room. It's a small space with only 8' ceilings and having a color on the ceiling really helps make the room not feel as small. A little counterintuitive, but it really works!
