Unique Backsplash for My Kitchen?
Good Questions

Tile is slowly going out of style, backsplashes made from a variety of different materials are being used more and more. Materials such as glass, stainless steel and pressed aluminium often mean far less joins for a more seamless look. Few joins also mean less grime to build up, and no grout to keep white.

Glass is great for a modern sleek look. The glass is painted in virtully any cover, and it's this side that is attached to the wall.

Stainless steel pairs great with an industrial or ahigh-end commercial look. Pressed aluminium makes a great contrast to a modern kitchen, or a new addition a traditional kitchen

Do Americans not use Real Estate Agents when looking for rental properties? Also, here in Australia, any deposit (called a bond and is 6 weeks rent) actually has to be lodged with the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority, so the landlord can't just run off with your money when you decide to move.

I'm really liking the first pic. Nice mix of textures and the colors work really well.

I personally voted for this one - http://s3.amazonaws.com/newsok-photos/1475769/medium.jpg

I thought it captured the essence of a Barbie doll house whilst still maintaining a usable floor plan.

All designs were fun though!

Agree on the sink xand83. My small kitchen also has a single sink. Double sinks just waste precious bench space in small kitchens, especially when you can utilize dishwashers!

We were very lucky here in Australia. The government gave out grants to everyone in older homes to get ceiling installation. This meant it was virtually free to get this done. It made a huge difference in keeping my house cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Unfortunately, the service did come at a price. A man died from installing the installation due to a lack of safety requriements. The grant meant there was a boom in companies laying the installation.

The boards your friend was presented by her designer was the first step for the designer to begin creating the final room. Putting together 3 different ideas in a visual medium is a lot faster than putting together a total cost. It is used to try to limit the use of billable hours for the designer and the client. By broadly determining the clients likes and dislikes, the designer can then start to find the objects/ finishes/remodels that will be required for the final design. I believe a really solid brief will help the designer give a quote that realistically equates to budget.

In regards to how a designer/decorator is paid, I agree that the terms of how the designer/decorator charges is made transparent with their client. That way, both parties can be in agreement with how time is spent. Flexibility by the client and the designer/decorator should ideally go both ways.

When to Hire an Interior Decorator

A good interior designer/decorator can help bring out MORE of your personality and inject that into your space. Designers/decorators should also be about problem solving and spatial layouts. It's more than picking out pretty trinkets and matching fabrics.

Obviously, a lot of people love to decorate their own homes and have creativity. But there are a lot of people out there that are "colour deaf", not unlike people who are tone deaf but still like to sing! Not everyone has an eye for colour or what just works, but they still want to live in a lovely home. These are the kind of people that can really benefit from a decorator or a designer.

I recently blogged about my problem with owning too many design magazines. I am actually really happy that with the internet, various blogs and internet magazines, it's much easier for me to look for inspiration digitally. I think now, I probably have way more access to up to date trends that buying 7-10 magazines each month. Storage is also becoming a problem, so at least digitally, I can keep more images, and for longer.

The railing was probably made smaller for the reason of moving furniture. If you do replace the railing, does it HAVE to be to your code? Just curious.

I'll have to download it, as I believe it's not available in my country.

I agree with most comments about big budgets makes the process a little boring. It will be interesting to see how these designers interact with their clients.

When I was doing my design studies, I was always under the impression that our role was not to fullfill our "art", but to try and make the spaces a home for the client, using our skills to inject the clients personality and dreams into the mix. I am intrigued to see how this pans out when using big personality designers with huuuuuuuuuuuuge budgets.

Pressed tin panels is a new trend being used here in Australia. It is not actually made from tin, but steel. There are a ton of patterns available, can be painted and is easy to install. I have it installed in my own kitchen and I love it. My home is modern, but the spashback makes a nice contrast, and creates some texture. Check out http://www.heritageceilings.com.au/index.php for ideas. Jean is lovely to deal with and she does ship overseas to the States.

Large laminate companies should also have cheap options for backsplashes that are also budget friendly.

Living in the space for awhile before making any major changes is pretty important. You will get a better feel for the space, how you use it etc.

If you are doing your renovations on a budget, sometimes you just have to be realistic and work with what you have. Opening up the kitchen in a way you envision may not be a viable option.

You talk about wanting to open up the kitchen area. Why do you want to do this? Answer and explore this question and it will help you come up with other solutions. For example, instead of opening up the kitchen to the living room, why not move the living room furniture more towards the dining room. Make the dining room your social hub, and that could help make your kitchen feel more open.

Personally, I feel serverys are outdated. For a fresh look, I'd suggest looking into removing it, and filling in the servery opening.

I've lived in my street for 5 years now. I don't know everyone by name, but enough to have a little chat if we see each other outside. Everyone looks out for everyone though. So much so, that most of the time I do not even lock my front door.

My immediate neighbours on either side I know by name and have been to their parties.

Love the drama that these "classic contrasts" create. I think they work really well in bathrooms!

Classic Contrast: Kitchens and Bathrooms in Black & White

My bathroom renovation was done for AUD $10,000. A total gut job, the space is 2.3m by 2.4m.

I kept the fixtures in their original position and bought a new soaker bath, glass screen, taps etc, full back to wall toilet made from Vitreous china and a wallhung vanity unit with a acrylic top, one shallow basin. Two walls were tiled to 2100mm (joinery height) with skirting tiles on the remaining walls. Mosaic tiles were used on the bath surround. We installed 2 new windows and repositioned the door into the centre of the wall, used a sliding door.

Working in the industry, I was able to purchase high quality brands at a discount, the fixtures and fittings came to $5000, and using contractors for installation, waterproofing, tiling and plumbing cost $5000. They did it in 2 days. Overall, a great price considering the quality of the finish.

The backsplash is toughened glass. We use it a lot in Australia, very popular. It can come in what ever colour you desire, as the back of the glass is painted. The glass has a natural green tinge to it though, so the colour will not be exact.

It's more expensive than tile, and changes can not be made to the glass once the glass is made. It's extremely easy to clean and look after, and looks stunning.

here is one national Australian supplier to give you more infomation - http://www.stegbar.com.au/products/splashbacks/

I'm sure there are North American suppliers.

Instead of snarking of the use of Ikea, why not look at how the use of the furniture is appropiate to it's application. And isn't that what good design is all about? I was always under the impression that that's what we love about our favourite Mid-Century designers.

Ikea is inexpensive, but well designed furniture. All their pieces work not only well in their original use, the pieces are also highly adaptable to new uses. It makes good design accessable to everyone. The fact that so many people use it, is testament that Ikea is very successful in it's goals.

The owner wanted to create a well designed space suitable to her needs, that also suited her modest budget. I think she has done very well.
