Sasmita, formalin (formaldehyde) is a carcinogen and doesn't belong in a kitchen! If you're going to can something for decorative use, I'd suggest sticking to safer substances like vinegar.

I also find the idea of fake canned goods a little weird. I like the suggestions of dry goods or empty decorative jars to be much more attractive.

Actually, I'd say it's more akin to ordering Chinese food and then using chopsticks to eat it. Still OK in my book.

Have your kids ever made an igloo out of snow in the wintertime? Is it wrong for a family to stay in a yurt at a national park? Indigenous people all over the world came up with creative solutions for shielding themselves from the elements. As long as we teach kids the true history of these structures--not just the spaghetti western version--why not admire and adapt what others before us have developed?

I'm slowly whittling down my "too many things." I'm using up toiletries and making regular trips to the thrift store these days. It feels good.

I'm another who doesn't understand the obsession with books. To anyone who believes that the mere possession of books produces knowledge, I advise you to go read Petunia, a children's book by Roger Duvoisin. Petunia the goose finds a book and decides that carrying it around makes her wise. Only after she hurts several of her friends does she realize: "Now I understand. It was not enough to carry wisdom under my wing. I must put it in my mind and in my heart." Gosh, how I love that book. I've committed that line to memory.

You need not possess a book to carry its wisdom in your mind and your heart. And in this incredible digital age, should you feel the need to revisit that knowledge firsthand, take comfort in knowing that it's never further away than Google or your local library.

Laughing my head off at the suggestion that someone could become infected with salmonella after washing their dog in the kitchen sink. Yes, salmonella infection often arises from eating food that has come into contact with animal feces. But you know how that happens in the real world? That would be when cow manure is liquified and sprayed onto your organic arugula. I think that people who are so squicked out by that photograph would positively die if they saw how their veggies were grown.

Actually, if the Ikea glasses are $0.25 each, that would be $3 for a dozen.

The comforter is from The Company Store. My friend & I saw it in their outlet store about a year ago, so I'm not sure if it's still for sale or not.

I'm pretty sure the bed is from Ikea, isn't it?

Trying to get some reviews on the Alma Bloom. What do you think of it? How many months of use do you expect to get out of it?

How is the Alma crib working, size wise? How old do you think your daughter will be when she outgrows it? I love the style, but hear from some folks that it is outgrown quickly.

I'm pretty sure that this is a summer cabin, not a year-round living arrangement. That makes the lack of privacy (internally & externally) much more manageable.

Beautiful space! I, too, would have loved that play space.

Problem #1: Guest bedrooms are wasteful of space.
Problem #2: I don't want a TV in my living room.

Solution: A daybed + TV in the spare room.

"Seriously - you do not NEED a dishwasher. Try doing your bit for the environment."

@Hongkonger- Actually, dishwashers are almost always more water efficient than hand washing. That still doesn't mean that anyone NEEDS one, but you're working off of a false premise.

We've been debating the same issue in our small kitchen for 2 1/2 years now. We can probably only fit a single dishdrawer. We live in a rural area, so the challenge has been finding a skilled contractor that we can trust to install it.

I bought a bowl like this--about 12 inches in diameter--when I was in Turkey some years ago. Alas, I was briefly separated from my luggage for a few moments and the baggage handler inadvertently smashed my beautiful bowl. I now display it on a high shelf, where the broken bottom edge isn't visible. It would be so nice to have a "whole bowl."

You do indeed need to be careful about keeping flammables away from steam radiators. But our radiators use hot water. They never get painfully hot to the touch and there's no risk in leaving delicate items on the radiator shelf, even in the winter.

Just remember, postage rates are projected to go up in early 2011. Don't horde too many of those 44-centers, or you'll be mussing about with those 2-cent add-ons in the new year.

I live in Minnesota and have a detached garage, so I get where you're coming from.

Still, this seems like such an enormous waste of electricity for such a limited return. I'm trying to explain this concept to the other half of the world's families for whom just having a car or consistent electricity would be a big deal.

Confirming what others have said. No birds would use this as a birdhouse. I like Patrick's idea of a birdfeeder, though. You'd probably want to cut a second hole on the opposite side and add some small holes in the bottom for drainage. If you want to convert another coconut to a birdhouse, here's a list of some native birds and the appropriate hole sizes: http://www.amishgourds.com/site/1278922/page/443222
