I have a red Cuisinart 5 qt. oven I bought a few years ago at T.J. Maxx; there were a couple of chips on the edge of the lid, so it was cheap. The chips don't seem to have made a difference in the pot's performance. I like that the lid's knob is also made of enameled metal--safe in high heat. I used the pot recently to make Faith's Baked Mushroom Risotto with Caramelized Onions--delicious!

Think of the "breakfast cookie" as an economical alternative to commercial breakfast bars, granola bars, energy bars...

People just want this form of food available, so why not make them at home more cheaply, then wrap and freeze for an ample supply?

I love Ree! And for gudnis, according to her blog, she wears Cover Girl "Crazy for Coffee" lipstick. Hope the TV stuff doesn't ruin her, she seems so practical and grounded.

Usually can't run it in the middle of the night, as our water softener or the water system's iron filter runs anywhere from 2 to 5 a.m. Water can't be used during those regenerations (we have well water).

I love your photo of the geraniums!

I just read "My Antonia" about how hard the immigrant women worked in the fields out west in the 1880's, and I'm feeling like a total slacker. All I did were flowers this year--not even a tomato plant.

Sweets, sweets, and more sweets! Buckeye balls, cookies, chocolate-mint bars: all in preparation for next weekend's graduation party! But I'm also planning and shopping for the chicken salad, slow-cooked pulled pork, and salads. I should have definitely defrosted my upright freezer before I started all of this!

Oh, meanwhile I baked a pan of cinnamon rolls last night for my graduating son to take to the senior breakfast this morning. Sugar, anyone?

I'm happy you re-posted this article--so informative on calorie content. If I eat carefully at lunch time and plan delicious things to eat, I'm happy with less. A thought on the bacon topping the sweet potato: I really believe, excepting food allergies/sensitivities-that there are no "bad" foods. We humans can eat too much, which is bad, but a little bit of bacon crunch and savoriness is a gift!

I received the Microplane Fine Grater for a gift over a year ago. It was the first zester-type grater I ever owned, and loved it. However, after less than a year the clear plastic casing that holds the metal part cracked and gradually broke off completely. The plastic, in my opinion, is too thin and delicate to hold up to the force used for grating and zesting. I plan to replace it with a Microplane Grater-Zester.

Martha Stewart's Everyday Food mag, November 2010, has a recipe for "Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins" that taste exactly like doughnuts! They are dense, spicy, and baked--then brushed with butter and rolled in cinnamon sugar.

Love the red accents. I've been adding a few of those into my beige and white kitchen and love the pop of color--the lamp is awesome. It would be a joy to cook in this kitchen!

Years ago I was asked to bring rolls for the big holiday family dinner. It's a simple "potato dough" recipe a friend shared with me when I was a newlywed, and I've since figured out it's the same as an old Betty Crocker recipe. It's tender and sweetish, baking up moist and golden, every time. There was a near-stampede for seconds the first year I brought them, and riots are threatened if I don't bring enough now for seconds and thirds. Relatives are caught wrapping them up and hiding them in purses "for the trip home."

I love these cookies! My young kids enjoyed them for breakfasts, and now that they are married they still love them. Must try next with the Gouda.

I often lamented that my husband hated coffee and we couldn't gaze into each other's eyes over a steaming cuppa, like in the commercials. Thirty years later I can't drink the stuff any longer because of health issues. I would hate it if he now complained that I wasn't drinking coffee with him!

On another note, I have enjoyed the culinary pedestal on which I have been placed by my husband for over thirty years. He is a brilliant man, serves me and our family like crazy and a loving guy, but definitely not a cook. He once confessed to me that he is so amazed that I "mix things together" mysteriously and come up with such delicious meals for him. I treasure my elevated position!

I realize the question has to do with seeking common ground before long-term commitment--a wise task.

We were having a couple over last night, and I wanted to make the meal a bit special and also not have the oven on right before they came, so the house would be cooler. I baked a Lemon Olive Oil cake in the morning (Gourmet's fantastic fail-proof recipe) and made lemon sorbet--dessert done! We grilled marinated chicken breasts (lemon juice, olive oil, and a bit of cumin), and also did Caprese pizzas on the grill. (It was raining lightly while the grill was on, so mercifully it wasn't so hot outside.) As my guests dug into their first bites of the cake and sorbet, I received the greatest compliment I ever got for my cooking..."This is what we'll be eating in heaven!!"
