My only suggestion would be to move the desk over by the wall shelves that are at the end of your bed (I think where the easy chair is.) That way, you have shelves for your books and things. That opens up the middle of the room for some type of living roomish sitting area under the pendant light. I would have the seating area face what looks like the window. Maybe you could put a small t.v. stand there (where the desk is in the picture) with a tv (if you wanted that) Its hard to tell how much space you have for furniture...maybe a loveseat with a chair? I like your wardrobes where they are. Is it possible to move those over all the way to the wall (where the nook is?) You could place your dresser next to your sink and use the top for with storage you need for getting ready. Like Jewelry holders, cute baskets for hair stuff ect... If you can move the dresser you could create some type of entry way system (maybe hooks and a bench) for when you walk in...for your bags, coats and and your keys.
You totally can add color without painting. Use curtains, pillows, a fun rug in the middle of the room, cover your pinboard with fabric, your bedding.

I hope this helps

I think the biggest change I would do in the bathroom is really clean the grout. You can get grout pens that can help (just google it) I would also cleans and then caulk around your tub to make it crisp and clean. I would paint the walls and the ceiling grey in your bathroom (Maybe functional grey by Sherwin Williams or Requiste Grey by Sherwin Williams.) (It will blur the line of the top of the wall and make the room look bigger. I would hang a crisp white fabric shower curtain floor to ceiling. I think it could make the tub and tile look intentional and graphic.. I also think a white roman shade with brown and white horizantal stripes could be a cool look and an play off your brown tile. If you need a water proof option here is a DIY version: http://wp.me/p1oFeC-qb

I also think a light grey (like Sherwin Williams agreeable grey) in a high gloss (for the reflectiveness in light) You could go with stained wood and white furniture with all sorts of options in colors of textiles like, navy, green, yellow. It could be a fun room! Have fun!

Paint Colors for Basement Apartment? Good Questions

I have two dogs and I don't think I could have anything in my house but wood floors (I actually have laminate) I have a Rumba vacuum set to go on my floors every day at 10am while I am at work. That with another good vacuum once a week is a life saver! Wood/tile floors can be mopped and it helps with the smell factor too.

I would second a leather couch or a darker microsuede. My dogs are not allowed on the couch unless there is a blanket on it. It some time to train them but it is so worth it because I have the best of both worlds...time with my dogs and control when I don't want them around. All that to say a blanket would help.
You have lots of good options though.

If you don't want to do anywork I think the first option is great. If you want to do some work, you could purchase ikea expedit, add legs and a top to it. Then buy all the drawers and doors that go with it. If you wanted a bigger one bolt two together, add a top to it and legs to make it look like one unit.

Another DIY option is to find a similar dresser frame, take all the drawers out and slide hardware. Clean up the inside to make it hollow and then build the middle shelf part to fit in the dresser.

good luck

Great work on your bathroom. I am impressed with your tiling! When I first looked at the space without reading anything I couldn't figure what feature to set my eyes on. The tile, the brick or the color. I think that is the problem. Its a small space so you are bombarded by three distinct features. You have acheived a very modern, bright and clean look with the tile. Love it. If it were me, I wouldn't let the paint battle with it. Many have suggested picking a paint color that goes with the brick. I think you should be more cohesive with the tile. It is the bigger element in the room. I would go a light to medium grey that flows with the tile grout. I would even go with a semi-gloss paint for a little more reflection. Then, Let the brick be what it is...an accent or a quirk that gives character. (I love it too)

I agree with the lighting reccomendations above. I can't tell if you have a vent. I would change the overhead light to a lighted vent fan and then call an electrician to get you wired up for a light over the sink. You could do something stainless and industrial to polish off your subway tile brick look.

I respect you for wanting to lay off the wallet. I agree with the gray walls. I would just keep the door. There will be tiles that will be damaged. Honestly, if you have $45.00 that will buy you a Homax bathtub/tile refinishing kit. It comes with cleaner and two spray cans of paint. I have done it a few times and have loved the results. It is tedious but not hard. You can turn that pink and green into white...paint the walls what you want, and all the sudden the cabinet fits until you get to do the real renovation. Homax can be found at Lowes or HD. Buy the spray kind NOT the brush on kind..its easier and you have better results.

Since you walls are neutral put some color on those walls with your curtains all the way up. I would say rod with clips or hidden track (depending if you have enough space for a rod) I would go all the way down to the floor but just touching the floors. when i saw your window i immediately thought of this post on AT: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/look/look-frank-roops-striped-curtains-034808
