Which brand is abalone? I painted my former office abalone - and while I loved the color, it had an unusually strong tendency to shift colors with changing light and often looked closest to a pale lavender (not so far from the pearly color on the inside of... an abalone shell...). It was very pretty but it did not look grey very often.

I just made yogurt for the first time this weekend. I used a crockpot and it worked fantastically! All I used were: crockpot, milk, Stonyfield yogurt (as the starter), and towels. A crockpot gets the job done - and is obviously a multi-tasking appliance.

For a similar look, but likely not a similar function, you could use balsa wood from a craft store to create overlapping squares and paint it the desired color. For obvious reasons of flammability and strength they might not be suitable for candles... but perhaps some little led lights? I bought tiny (TINY) battery-powered led lights to hang off centerpieces at my wedding and something like that might add a bit of twinkle.

I used to like steamed broccoli and cheddar cheese (or cheddar "cheese" sauce for those who can stomach it) on a baked potato.

I particularly like your color choices in the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Could you please clarify for me where the dark grey wall is? Is it only one accent wall in the dining room, framing the doors, or does it extend into another living space? Thanks for sharing your beautiful home!

Don't you imagine if she is baking cookies for a photo shoot or something - that it's more likely there are 5 or 6 aides working fast and furiously with those rolling pins than Martha standing by her lonesome with one sad little rolling pin while the others languish in a drawer? Her lifestyle is not our lifestyle.

It makes me happy to see such neat drawers - staged or not.

This may not be what you're going for - but what about doing an oatmeal bar? You could cook the oatmeal either the night before in a slow cooker or rice cooker or whip up a big batch on the stove the morning of (you could help prepare by pre-measuring the oats and water or milk and storing them, ready to cook) with a bounty of various toppings - fruits, nuts, granola, cream, yogurts, etc. You could prep all the toppings in advance. This may not sound terribly exciting, but bars are fun and if you happen to whip up a pitcher of mimosas, almost anything seems tasty ; )

Or you could do the same thing, but with eggs- instead of omelettes, do them scrambled with toppings -- this might take more cook-work on the morning of, though, since many egg-friendly toppings are often better cooked (think sauteed mushrooms, onions, greens). This could easily be served alongside bread - bagels, toast, whatever and perhaps accented with a fruit dish for a nice, complete meal.

In lieu of these ideas - a baked french toast type dish might be a nice option - something that could perhaps be prepped and frozen, and then baked an hour before.

Thanks for the input! Much to my husband's relief I am tabling this option for desk chairs. I'll find a place for one someday! : )

Can anyone comment on the comfort of these chairs? I'm shopping for a new desk chair and am torn between style and comfort. I'm a writer - so when I'm at the computer, I am in the chair for some time.

I'm trying to choose between a 'traditional' office chair in a modern profile, a Bertoia (or Bertoia-style chair), or a small-footprint dining or occasional chair - perhaps an antique mall find, reupholstered.

Any first-person Bertoia-sitting experiences are greatly appreciated! Speak up, what does your fanny have to say? : )

I'm paid by the hour, so although I certainly *could* eat breakfast at home or take a break, I usually eat breakfast at my desk so I can make the time spent sorting emails go a little faster.

This morning I brought oatmeal with bananas and peanut butter in a tupperware container and a thermos of coffee (the coffee options nearby are... sub par).

I use the Cuisinart Lasagna Pan, which was around $40. I normally am only cooking for 2-4 so this is a perfect size and works well.

I spritz mine with nonstick spray and I've never had any problems... I don't think they are advertised as "non stick" so I'm not sure why people seem surprised when their baked goods stick. The cupcakes or muffins pop right out if you spray them. I have several different sets - "regular", a fluted flower shape, and two different heart shapes.
