Yes - breakfast stirfry for me! A load of any veggies (this is my best way to get through a CSA box) stir-fried with ginger, garlic, red pepper flake and soy sauce. Top with a poached egg or two. YUM!

I'm not a fan of double-bowls, but for my clients that insist on one, I recommend this Kohler version with the lower bowl divider. The lower divider makes putting large pots/pans in the sink easier.

One should use a soil designed for roof gardens - it's lighter and holds onto an appropriate amount of water. @Zepper - it's beneficial as it slows rainwater headed to stormwater systems. The delay can help stormwater lines from being overwhelmed during heavy rain events.

I'm with you, croquemadam, on our 'euro-reverse' style.
i'm kind of surprised this approach - (righties holding the fork in the right hand, but holding it euro-style) and knifing with the left - isn't more common.

Using Your Knife and Fork: The American Way vs. the European Way

My fridge often contains a bowl of prepared beans, prepared whole grain (farro, quinoa, or brown rice), a bowl of hard boiled eggs, and prepared greens. They're often used to make an easy lunch (add salad dressing), but are the base for many quick and healthy dinners too - easy to warm beans or grains, and add a few sauteed veggies and/or some protein. Vary it with hot sauce, cheese, etc.

Good luck!

oh yes! my melita serves me well for my wake-up. but better yet - i'm lucky enough to work just blocks from the king of pour-over coffee: coava, where they designed their own metal filters (lauded by the NYT). worth every penny of the $2.50/cup.

whoops - i meant to say that older appliances were often made of all-metal, and now plastic has replaced many of those moving parts in cheaper appliances.

ooh - well-stated @jmorri26! yes - by hand (especially no-knead) is a breeze!

And about @TorchyBlane's input: "antique" appliances often were made much better than current appliances (e.g. with plastic parts instead of metal).

There are 3 24" wide x counter depth models I like: Summit #FFBF245, which a contractor friend has and loves (awesomely energy efficient too) and is about $1000; the same LG models that others have mentioned, and the swank german Liebherr. There's also a website: compactappliances.com that's a pretty good resource.

Most important: DURABILITY! Design your kitchen for 25 years (not 10). That means good quality cabinets and very durable countertops and flooring. IMO, cork - while an easily renewable resource - is not an environmentally-responsible kitchen floor because it will need to be replaced within 10 years (and will look pretty rough those last few years). I like your other flooring options, including "sustainable hardwood", which to me means locally-sourced or salvaged and FSC when possible.

5 Ways to Remodel Green in the Kitchen

@CCP MBD is right - each range is going to vary. people that had one years ago should check out newer ones - things progress! a swank 24" viking range (like a client of mine has) has burners that take up the full cooktop surface. and the oven is very roomy and he's had no trouble baking big elaborate dishes.

What Are the Disadvantages of a 24-Inch Range?
Good Questions

A couple design recommendations when remodeling your kitchen:
- Consider a 24-inch range or cooktop with 4 burners (6-inches smaller than standard) - many brands, including the swank ones, offer these. all the function in less space.
- Or, depending on your use, consider one of the 2-burner models (http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/kitchen-design/5-twoburner-cooktops-116982)
AND having one or two of these portable burners (http://www.williams-sonoma.com/shop/electrics/specialty-electrics/induction-burners/?cm_type=lnav)
on hand for those rare occasions when more burners are needed.

Nice article. I wonder whether the US produces much cork - would be nice if it didn't have to come from so far. Tho perhaps the carbon from transport is offset by all the other positives...

and un-sealed, you could embrace the rust as 'patina' - the way soapstone ages and gets more character.

i'm working on a project in which the kitchen cabinets will be faced with unfinished steel - so excited!

Wow - enviable! I'd make a dining table with bench seats. These pieces deserve to be FEATURED! And it'd be fun to pair them up with some bright/glossy/refined legs or such to bring some contrast and playfulness.

Otherwise: shelves, bath counter (sealed of course), bench seat (would look really handsome against a smooth concrete wall)... endless possibilities!
