Ha ha ha....since I live in an Eichler home and I'm expecting my first kid some friends posted this on my Facebook page. Cracked me up! Funny part is that Joseph Eichler had families with children in mind when he developed his homes. The central atrium is a great place for kids to play and the walls of glass allow parents to easily keep an eye on things. Plus, the hallway bathroom has a door to the outside so it doubles as a mudroom/cleanup room after a day in the pool.

I agree with everyone that said you give your son the bedroom and keep the living room for yourself. I would suggest a murphy bed instead of a day bed - more room and it can completely disappear when not in use.

One of the best kitchen renovations in the neighborhood! That dining room table is even more gorgeous in person.

And there is an exhaust fan over the stove - the original one from 1963. It fits flush to the ceiling behind the beam.

Mrs. Redneck Modern here....well said madampince! My sentiments EXACTLY. And to all - thanks for the compliments on our home and thanks for the well wishes. I'm doing great and as a little off-topic PSA - I'm under 40 and I have no history of breast cancer in my family. Never in a million years did I ever think it would happen to me. Everyone (guys and gals) please be aware of your bodies and if something seems amiss be sure to have it checked out. /PSA

As for vintage lamps and the wiring - we've had many vintage lamps and never had an issue with the wiring. Switching out the wiring will probably give you more piece of mind but it's not mandatory. Also, if you find you're paying a premium for vintage lamps with upgraded wiring, it's pretty easy to switch out the wiring yourself (not on all lamps, but many). At a minimum I would inspect any lamp I get (old or new) for frayed wires or loose connections.

I bought two of these and put them side by side:

You could get as many as you need and probably stack them too. I put gray felt in the bottom of each drawer to keep things from sliding around.

Our house isn't that old (1963), but considering the original owners (the people we bought the house from) raised 9 kids in it we've found some interesting stuff during our renovation:

And the best find - the original brochures for our Eichler neighborhood which we actually found prior to closing and the family was kind enough to give us to keep with the house:

I bought a vintage daybed on eBay and had it shipped from Michigan to California via Greyhound. The closest Greyhound Station is in Oakland and overall it was a great experience. It was well packaged and arrived safely.

The handiest part of the whole process was that they were open until like 9:30/10:00 pm so I didn't have to rush over after work to get there before they closed. We were there when it was pretty quiet and they let us borrow a dolly and move our car over near the loading area to make things easier.

I was skeptical at first but I would definitely do it again.

As long as the paint stays intact it should be fine. I would have someone clean it really well for you to get any loose bits of paint off and then coat it with several layers of clear polyurethane.

The only area of the cart I would be particularly concerned with are the wheels since that's a friction point where paint can continuously wear off. So, if the wheels are painted maybe you take them off or make sure they are cleaned really well. Even so, as long as your not rolling it from one end of your house to the other regularly you're probably okay there too.

I gave my left boob, tit, breast whatever you want to call it, to breast cancer earlier this year and endured many months of chemo and radiation on top of that. 36 years old and no family history. Who cares what you call them, just get them checked - men and women. Lighten up people....If I didn't joke about it every once in a while I don't think I would have survived.

My husband and I were just discussing the other day how glad we were that the kitchen in our Eichler was not original when we purchased it. We were able to demo it with a clear conscience. We have neighbors with original kitchens and they are falling apart but they don't have the heart to replace them. And I don't blame them. The original kitchens are great.
