I am a super taster and I hate cilantro. Not only do I not like the taste, but so much as a sniff in the produce aisle will cause me to retch. Eating it causes violent expulsion within 20 minutes. I figured this out when I would be sick after eating good Asian food made by a boyfriend and good Mexican food from higher priced restaurants, back before cilantro was everywhere. Cilantro was the missing link between the two cuisines.

My worst experiences come when someone thinks they know better about my intolerance than I do, and they slip it into food as parsley because they think that the only people who could possibly hate cilantro are those who haven't tried it. Um, no.

As to the genetic link? My sister has the same problem. My brothers do not.

I use oat flour all the time in baked goods. I make it from rolled oats in my food processor. My kids love it! I agree with the statement that mixing it with ww flour or unbleached flour is best so there is some gluten present.

I love spelt flour too, but I haven't found a supplier for bulk quantities.

Me too, Slow Lorus. I first had them as an appetizer at a wedding in the 80s. The caterer used a leaf tip to pipe a pretty ribbon of herbed cheese in the peas, very pretty.

I love the texture of broccoli when florets are boiled for exactly 6 minutes. Crisp yet silky, and I eat it frequently and in such quantity that I am not worried for minor nutrient loss. Steamed broccoli is always tough IMO.

I say try your favorite vegetables steamed, boiled, sauteed and roasted. Chose your favorite preparations and use ALL of them frequently. It is hard to go wrong when you are eating vegetables!

I've found that lunch packages are very welcome too. Dad are often around for dinner (even if they just order take out) but new moms are usually on their own for lunch. I focus on foods that can be stored frozen easily heated in single servings and eaten with one hand. Burritos, spanikopita, quiche, soups all fit the bill.

I freeze celery all the time. Slice it up and throw it in a bag. It works fine in cooked dishes and in mixed salads like egg salad. It doesn't work for stuffing with peanut butter. I'm okay with that.

I also freeze rice all the time. I freeze plain rice, fried rice, pilafs and risottos. Works great, and often saves me when I need a fast last minute meal.

I use my slow cooker! Polenta is one of the few things I think slow cookers excel at making. Put everything in the crock, stir it once, set it on medium and come back at the end of the day. It's the best polenta because the cornmeal really has a chance to hydrate and cook. I like to serve it with a chunky tomato sauce, a poached egg, and some Romano cheese.

Smellofsawdust, I had that problem too. Now I slice it up and put it in a container and freeze it. When I need celery, I pull out a small handful and toss it into the pot. Easy peasy. Works cooked or raw as long as celery isn't the main ingredient as it does get a little mushy when thawed.

I don't eat potato peels because of the pesticide residue, but I would if I could buy organic potatoes. We used to waste the heels from sandwich bread. I don't really use bread crumbs for anything, so I didn't know what to do with them. Now I cut out a circle with a cookie cutter and use them as sandwich thins or burger buns. Our biggest source of food waste is leftovers that weren't popular the first time around, I think, or small amounts of ingredients leftover from recipes that use just a portion of an item.

I mix them with oatmeal for granola, or with other grains for hot cereal. And I've whirled the flakes in the food processor to make flour which I've used in pancakes, muffins, etc.

I cook chickpeas a pound at a time in my crockpot overnight or on the stove. Then I drain them and portion them out in 1.5 cup amounts in quart ziplock bags. I lay the bags flat, stack them up and freeze them. Works great!

Do they smell/taste as you would imagine bad paint would smell? That's what I find when flax seeds go off. I keep mine, whole or ground, in the freezer. No need to defrost before using, either.

I pass bad teas off to my husband. He will drink just about any tea, even ones he does not like. I'm so lucky!

I like the sliding grater one. I haven't tried the ricer-style one. The first one is hard to use with all the steam from the pot of boiling water. Before I received my spaetzle maker as a present, I did what my mother and grandmother did - I scooped up a spoonful of dough and dropped it off the end with a knife. Slower but still effective!

Mushroom paprikash and homemade spaetzle is one of my winter meal favorites!

Mine seem to keep well wrapped in foil and stored in the cupboard. No freezer, it does reduce the flavor of this tropical seed pod. Best place to store the beans is probably in a jar of vodka or sugar.

Lanea, exactly. The conditions inside a dishwasher are very corrosive, it takes strong detergents to remove food without scrubbing.

I think chicken broth is overused in the same way, and cilantro. So often certain ingredients seem to appear in recipes just because they can.

Chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies store in the freezer very well as cookie dough balls that you can place on a cookie sheet and bake up in 10 minutes or 1 minute more than the recipe suggests.

I tried this recipe when I ran across it on Amy Karol's Angry Chicken blog a few weeks ago. I'm now making a batch weekly and stocking up on sweetened condense milk on holiday sale. LOVE IT! I do leave out the sugar, I don't think it needs it. I'd like to try to make a version that is milk-free for my husband who is lactose-intolerant. Any ideas for a good substitute for sweetened condensed milk?
