I love our new house. I was a renter for almost seven years, before that I was in a bad marriage, but living in a great house that I poured my blood sweat and tears into. Here's the weird part that haunts me. When we bought that house it came with an amazing music studio space built into the detached garage. This was a musicians dream space, ample, sound proof, great lighting , ventilation etc. Neither I nor my then husband were musicians and hence had no use for the space. Over the three years we lived there , we were plenty busy with other projects and never got around to dismantling the studio. Years after the sale of that house and the divorce that preceded it, I met and fell in love with a serious, multi-intrumentalist musician. In the four years that we've been married he has been through many challenging creative space situations/ rentals. In our city, they are rare and highly coveted = expensive. He has had to pay exorbitant sums for closet sized accommodations, often shared until the other party inevitably flaked on the rent. I have envisioned that studio many times, and what it would have meant to have that kind of space now. Some things just line up a tad askew in life. At any rate I'm still so much happier in my life now I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I have had a subscription to House Beautiful for a little over a year and have been pretty happy with it over all. I can't justify more than one subscription right now so I think next year I am switching to Canadian House and Home , its more my style.

These are lovely, living room worthy specimens to be sure, but the price? ouch. I have two attractive rope (think hammock like) chairs with cushy padded seat and back support hanging in each of my girls rooms. The rooms aren't very large but with a little more room than you would allocate for any other standard chair they are fine and the girls LOVE them. I found them on amazon for under $30 bucks each - yep. They have other options for just a bit more that are also very nice. Just sayin'.

Great, hilarious post! I too have a black thumb despite having every good intention to be a good indoor gardener. I grew up in the jungles of Hawaii where things just grow without much or any effort from humans, so being in control of light and water and soil is a relatively new concept. I've given up many times but the lure of having green things growing nearby has always brought me back.

Hey there ! Use orange essential oil on the sticky residue and scrape off! It works wonders and a little dab will do.

Echoing other posts, the biggest challenges for my living room are furniture placement and no distinct entry way. There are so many permanent features to work a sensible and stylish arrangement around, windows, doors, fireplace etc. ever wall has a limitation so something has always got to give - a view, a passage way etc. I currently have an arrangement that works well considering, but I like to change things up every once in a while especially during the winter when we spend so much time in the same old room , I came up with this arrangement through MUCH trial and error though its not particularly innovative but I know I will want to change it eventually but nothing else seems to work without buying all new furniture which is not desired nor a viable option. As for the lack of entry, I've organized it to look and feel like a designated spot but because its part of the larger room I dont like seeing it , and entry way furniture and accessories always come off looking utilitarian and dont blend in with the rest of the room to disappear.

It should be noted that black is a companion color in every one of these photos, be it counter top, appliance etc... Black helps keep these metallic tones grounded and fresh at the same time.

We made these a few nights ago and they were fabulous! We doubled the recipe and only managed to get 18 of these in the size described though, so watch out for that - these go quick!

well stated. In my personal case the term isn't used in such a way and my husband doesn't seem to mind it, allow me to explain: he is a musician and has loads of equipment specific to his interests. It actually benefits everyone in our home that he has a designated spot to make his music and he loves having a place that is just his own to do so in. heck, I'd love a space of my own in our house but I have no such need for one. I respectfully disagree that these terms necessarily hurt either gender, I don't feel my domestic inclinations limit me as a person even if I am a woman and it is cliche. I think being accepted for who you are and respected for what you contribute should be ok even if its not envogue. I dont like being told I cant be into things that are considered the vestiges stereo types past without sacrificing the respect of others. Shouldn't equality mean we are equal no matter what we chose to be interested in?

I think we need to examine an idea expressed in this post that I feel is very pervasive in our society. All things should be equal for all people, yes! But the idea that we cant be inherently different and equal , especially between the sexes, is so frustrating. Just because women typically excel at certain things and men at others doesn't mean one is better or worse than the other. It also doesn't have to mean that anyone is excluded. A lot of me don't feel the need to have a say in the decorating of the entire house - that's ok. If a man is interested, he should be a welcomed partner to his spouse or significant other in the decorating process. Conversely women don't have to be the boss on all matters interior decorating, but as many are more interested than their male counter parts thats ok too. We ARE different AND equal. sheesh. As far as "man cave" goes, I think whats intended by the phrase isn't meant to offend and if I personally knew a man who was offended by it or it became apparent that the use of the phrase was offensive I wouldn't use it. But in a home where a woman is the decorator and her guy just wants one space that he can feel free from the dictates of her design aesthetic that's ok too - why not? what would you call such a space?
