Where do you live? If it snows where you are toss it in your trunk. They work just as well as salt or kitty litter when you need some extra traction.

My bookshelves are closed at the ends, but I usually don't fill them all the way from end to end (I like to leave a little room on each shelf for an artifact or storage box to mix things up) so there are still end books. I used to over-think things like the end book until I started organizing the shelves into authors or collections, then shelving the books in size order, with the little books making up the ends. It's more democratic and I don't have to make any decisions that way. It satisfies my OCD.

I'd make a large bunch (literally like a bunch of grapes) of those spherical paper lanterns in varying sizes, either in white or shades of a color. Then all you'll need is a way to run an extension cord up onto the ceiling, a power strip up there to plug all of the multiple light cords into & someone with good balance.

One big one in the middle of the room or some smaller ones at each end would take the attention off the junky florescent lights.

These work fine for me, but when I open them after a season or two the sweaters or blankets inside always smell all chemical-y and stale. Any ideas about that?

My mom has floor art and two INSANE dogs. She has it on a sort of table-easel (but placed on the floor next to a bookshelf) and it rarely gets knocked over even though it's in a high-traffic area.

I would either cover the couch or make some fun pillows in different, brightly colored patterns in a single color scheme. Then I might consider painting the BACK of the built-in bookshelves a coordinating, but possibly more muted color.

I bought the matching sofa at my local salvation army over here in Michigan! It was $50 but the week I bought it they happened to be having a sale - 50% off all furniture. I couldn't imagine buying the matching armchair for 10x the price I paid for the sofa but, man... that would look so good in my living room.
