I have to ask -- where did you get the *fabulous* lamps on either side of your couch???

This post is so timely! I'm currently looking for an apartment in Toronto, and it's turning into a major headache.

My main problem is this: I don't have any former landlords, as up until now, I've always lived at "home" with my mom -- I even stayed home through university, which I finished just over a year ago. I'm now ready to move out, and I have a great job and salary, great credit, and no debt... BUT I can't provide any references from former apartments. I'm getting the feeling that because of this, I'm automatically discounted from competition for the better apartments, i.e., the ones I actually really want.

How do I get around this?

I like the idea of a gallery and especially a library, but my first thought was also to put a bar-area there. I agree with putting a tall credenza where the table is, which would give you storage for bottles and glasses below (maybe even a stereo), and a work surface for mixing and pouring drinks. This would be especially good if you entertain a lot. Putting a few comfy chairs in the corners would also make the area feel welcoming.

I keep my receipts in a recipe-card box, organized by category with most recent in the front. After my taxes are done, I staple all the relevant receipts to my copy of the return and file it all away. If I ever need anything in there, I know where it is and it's all together.
