With so many reproductions of vintage posters available on the market, it sometimes becomes hard to tell if a poster is vintage or not. Certainly price is one way to tell - if a 'vintage' poster is selling for under $100, you're either getting a fabulous deal, or, more likely, you are buying a reproduction.
Reproductions are not a bad way to decorate if you are on a limited budget, but if you are able to invest in a vintage poster, chances are that it will appreciate in value, giving you not only fab art to look at, but a potential family heirloom as well.
Most poster dealers will be able to show you inexpensive vintage posters which can suit your needs, budget and decor - education is a large part of what we, as dealers, do. Don't be afraid to ask questions - that's wat we are there for!

I did this trip a few years ago and loved EVERYTHING about it - the sea, the food, the boat, the people. Thanks for bringing it all back for me!

We LOVE rooms with posters - large and/or small! Lots of clients have been coming in - with summer finally hitting Montreal residents are officially out of hibernation! - and our framed pieces are flying off the wall. What I like about Lulu's room is how she has hung pieces in a different way ... in the gallery we have begun experimenting with hanging posters so that they overlap in the corners - a little different, a bit of a conversation starter, and totally awesome!
Good work Lulu!

Another room decorated with posters - Yeah! Although most of our collection (www.laffichiste.com) is vintage, we have some great modern posters which would be great in a child's room (or that of his parents!)... it is always heartening to see decor which includes posters - and this room is great for the way in which it manages to be functional and fun at the same time. Kudos!

Yeah - another space with a vintage poster!! As a vintage poster dealer I keep sending clients to your site so they can see how easy vintage posters are to integrate with any design -- although I can't see all of Matt's poster I can see enough to know it's the real deal! Good on 'ya Matt! (And yes, cute dog. Nice floors. And then there's Matt + a poster. I for one couldn't ask for more!)

I LOVE seeing vintage posters in homes - particularly green homes! - as a vintage poster dealer I often tell clients and potential clients that these wonderful pieces of ephemera can go ANYWHERE and this story is one I will point them to as an illustration of that! Great use of space, and great use of posters!!

As a vintage poster dealer I know I am biased, but one of the things i love about some of these rooms (aside from the pure lines and elegance of space), is the fact that in more than one of the photos there are posters - either used to visually divide a space or just to add their inimitable colour and style.
Often when clients are trying to imagine what posters might look like in their spaces or homes, I point them to images on your website so that they can see how effective and beautiful posters (vintage or not) look ... So, thank you!

With so many copies of vintage posters out there, if it's vintage you want, here are a few pointers:
Vintage posters should show some history on them: often they were folded, so some crease lines or folds may be evident (even if the posters are mounted on linen);
I often say that vintage posters show their age in the same way a woman of a certain age might (I am one, so I feel this liberty is allowed!) - small discolourations, hairline cracks, etc. - these are what makes vintage posters vintage;
Occasionally you will see a tax stamp on vintage posters - the French, Italian and German governments levied a tax on advertisers, so some posters will show this (copies never do - they somehow haven't thought to add them - yet!);
Most dealers and auction houses sell vintage posters which are mounted on linen - the linen doesn't add any value to the poster but it does provide a solid backing for fragile and vintage ephemera as well as a strong base when framing.
The best way to tell if a poster is vintage or not is to deal with reputable dealers and auction houses. Those of us who have been in the business for a requisite number of years, and who have the credentials are part of an Association called the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association. There is a website where reputable dealers are listed. Like me!

Finally, if you're unsure, or the price is too good to be true, listen to your inner radar: you may not be an expert, but that's what inner radar is for!
