50+ pictures of tchotchkes and I still don't know what the place really looks like. I feel like a broken record, AT. Please, more wide shots? Am I the only one?

What is an altbau and how can I get one? All my favorite apartments have been in Berlin. Absolutely stunning.

All-together-now: "too many closeups, not enough wide shots..." That being said, from what I can see of it, I love the home. I love that you've taken a rental and a lot of Ikea and Target and made it look fresh and original. I think the house is happy to have you living there.

I'm sure the place is adorable, but it's hard to tell because I can't really see what it looks like. I'm sure glad I know what they had for breakfast though. Where's the recipe?

Great story. Although at first I thought it was going to be about John Wayne.

@thomas.boni - Nearly all of Ikea's curtains come in longer lengths, 98" to 118".

Sorry, @Cheryl K, the only thing I can't stand in a bathroom is having to share it with a cat.

Wow. I haven't seen pickled floors since the mid-80s. I guess they're coming back--and somehow in this house I don't mind. Nice use of space because it sure feels larger than 680 sf.

Lovely but I'm glad you don't live in earthquake country! I wouldn't be able to sleep under all that stuff that could fall on my head.

Beautiful. And thank you, AT, for finally giving us some wide shots so we can see what the place really looks like, not just endless closeups of soap dishes and knick-knacks.

@goodyread - I had a similar situation with a landlady who would not let me switch out a light fixture. (She actually said, "honey, when you own your own home, you can do whatever you want." YEUK!) And she visited often, so doing it anyway was not an option. I finally made a huge drum shade out of a cool fabric and some balsa wood, which I attached to the overhead fixture. It looked awesome and I got many complements from guests.

Stunning resto and loved seeing the before pics!

@newburgh restoration - Thanks for posting that link. Looking at these homes that need rescuing is like crack to me. Although I live in the West, I have always wanted to live in a loft space and it would be very tempting to chuck the sunshine and make one of these sad houses happy again.

@foddefafa and others who want to buy a nice expensive trash can: I splurged on a beautiful retro stainless steel can with a swinging-door opening in the lid for my kitchen. After a week, I hated it. The closed lid turned the garbage into a swampy, stinky mess, which spewed its odor into the kitchen every time I dropped something into the swinging door. No more closed-lid garbage cans for me. I ended up clearing out the cupboard under the sink and got a nice short, plastic can with no lid. I have to empty the trash daily (sometimes more if I'm cooking) but no more smelly kitchen. The beautiful retro can went to the charity shop.

Love the combination dining room/library. I've always wanted to do that. Lovely home, from what I could see.

AT - This is getting to be a constant frustration--too many close up vignettes and not enough wide shots! It's so hard to get an idea of what the place really looks like.

Usually homes of "world travelers" conjure memories of late-night babysitting at age 12, my employers' gruesome spear-wielding wooden masks staring at me from the walls, with nothing but the tick of a pendulum clock and reruns of "Trilogy of Terror" running in my head to keep me company. But I have to say I love this place, and would feel right at home here.

We bought in Ikea dining table which we use for a desk, and we love it. It is sturdy and so much better quality than any other desks we've bought at office supply stores for twice the price. We drilled a hole in the middle of the table and added a plastic cap with slots for cables, and attached a power strip to the underside of the table.
