I'd paint it in a heartbeat because knotty pine isn't that beautiful to me. It isn't teak or mahogany or really a precious wood. That said, to really paint knotty pine is not an easy process. The knots take so many coats to totally cover and will always bleed a little over time so you'd end up with a polka-dotted room without a thorough job. Hire it done during the winter months when painters will often give better prices for interior work in the Northeast. It's a lovely room but way too much wood for me.

Agree with Lori's suggestion above, but I like Saran wrap around the roller. Keeps it from drying out even overnight.

Don't see a thing wrong with decorating your room however you feel like even if it means putting some of her things into storage. Beyond that, it's her house now. You've been away for sometime and essentially have lost your vote in how her home looks. Go easy. Keep focused on why you are there and make the most of having something to fall back on.

I live in a rural area where people normally look out for one another but because it is New England there's also a certain amount of reserve. It's all good. But, I moved into a house last October and there's only one other house that I can see from here. It's fairly close by. A week after I moved in and had said hello to the new neighbor, we were hit by a freak snowstorm that paralyzed the region for days. No power and no way to get around since my car was in the shop when the storm ocurred. Said neighbor and I spoke once the morning after the storm when she was excoriating me for not trying to get snow off a magnolia tree in my side yard. I'd been shoveling out and simply hadn't gotten to it. I told her I had no transportation at the time. We had no power for six days. Not ONCE did she or her boyfriend, who were constantly coming and going, ask if I needed a ride to a grocery store or anything else. I hitchhiked everywhere until my car was repaired and that wasn't always easy in a super rural area. I've never spoken to her again. So much for neighbors taking care of each other. It was unusual in these parts where people have traditionally been so neighborly. Perhaps, she has a good excuse but at this point, I'm not interested in hearing about it.

There are so many variables when purchasing a sofa that there's a lot more to consider than just the listed reasons, and much of it depends on how it will be used. There are good manufactured sofas like Mitchell Gold (as an example). They're stylish and will hold up even under fairly heavy use for 5-8 years. Then everything starts to break down. Bench made sofas tend to cost far more but they will last longer and many folks consider them an investment. One of the reasons that slipcovered sofas are so popular now is that most all of the companies will keep slip templates even for discontinued models so down the line, the slipcovers are easily replaced. Considering that slips will run about half the price of the original sofa, it still racks up the $$$ outlay. It all depends on how often you like change.

I don't mind removing my shoes as long as I know in advance that it is a shoeless home. But what I don't understand is the statement that the U.S. is the only place in the world where people don't remove shoes indoors. I've lived in the U.K. and in France, and in neither place was it the norm.

It's one of those things that's sort of interesting but in the end, one has to ask 'why'?

Before the internet offered dozens of websites, in Manhattan there was the NY Times Sunday edition. I tipped a corner newstand guy to get the classifieds early (he had to cut a bundle open). After three weekends in a row, I landed a little studio on E. 47th. Not great but my first NY apt.

A couple of additional tips. Many owners of booths in antique centers will be around the days right before the first of the month, and they'll be looking to make their booth rent. Cash talks. Also if you spot something you like but the owner isn't around, ask the cashier to phone and make your offer that way.

The format is too confusing. If I want to read a magazine, I'll buy one. With all of the simple, easy to load and user friendly formats available, I'm surprised that they opted for this one. There might be good content, but I'm not navigating all that to find out.

I had them in one apartment in Manhattan, and they were leaded casement windows. Wonderful. Any number of door and window manufacturers make the wooden versions, but they don't seem very popular in this country at all. Too bad. They're lovely.
