Good for you for making it work. It shows how awesome New York is that people will accommodate to any size home to be there. (It also shows that landlords will charge high rents for places they probably wouldn't want to live in themselves.) I love the wall behind your table with the bird cages. You seem to get good light. I once lived with a bunch of people in an apt with no sink in the bathroom. Friends got used to us brushing our teeth at the kitchen sink. (Hey, it was the '70s, ha ha.) Your place has a lot of personality!

Callie, your place is loaded with something many of the other entries lack: charm. (Most of the (predictable) sterile, barren MCM spaces have the ambience of a surgical suite.) I love your bedroom, and all those windows with the airy curtains. Thumbs up!

A lot of people with bigger homes would envy you that bathroom; I know I do. Great place. The kitchen also looks just right for your space. Well done!

Lois, I love your home. It is my style! I especially love the pink walls. You've used the space well. And the exterior is to die for.

I have this identical sink in my kitchen. I can't take credit for it. My sellers had completely done over the kitchen and had gone high end to compensate for the tiny space. The kitchen was the main selling point, and the sink is what everyone comments on. It is a dream come true. Until I read this article, I didn't realize how well made it was. Built to last, much more than just a pretty face!

Cozy all the way. Comfort and rememberance. Meaningful stuff. Family heirlooms. Hand-me-downs. The minimalist look above has all the warmth and charm of a prison visiting room, a general-population pod.

Great post. This is very helpful. And what a refreshing change to have photos shot from the same angles and pretty much the same light!

My vote would be to leave it as is for a while, and live with it until you are SURE of which way you want to go. It is certainly not an eyesore as is; quite the contrary. You could use the interim time to experiment with throw pillows, throws, scarves, or whatever. Try different fabrics, textures, patterns, colors. That piece deserves some consideration. Are you sure it's a wise decision to attempt a DIY on a piece of that quality? Either way, good luck and congrats on scoring such a stunner.

What a beautiful job! I especially like the extra stuffing which makes the chairs look very opulent. And the fabric on the back is stunning! A total win.

The ottoman is gorgeous and looks like a very expensive, high end piece. It is perfect with the chairs, making a very pretty sitting area. I admire the patience involved in the construction.

As a veteran teacher I completely agree with eaevansmd. That advice is spot on. It made the papers in my state a while back when the fire department toured an elementary school at the end of summer. The teacher had come in, on their own time and own dime, and spent many hours decorating their classrooms to make them a great learning environment for their students. Many items were simply ripped out and discarded, without consulting the teachers first. As a new teacher you will get some leeway, but your best bet is to get advice from teachers in your district. Also, there are thousands of teacher websites that could help you with decorating. And check out pinterest. Lots of teachers share their creativity there. Good luck, and congrats on your new job.
