Love at first pic! Neat/tidy, with flat color pop and big pieces of art. Perfect.

I have a kid and apart from the office & kid's room, our place looks this clean. It can be done!

Tiny, but feels like a real home. The spirit of this place seems to ignore the tininess and live large.

Bravo for getting a piano in a small place.

Color scheme makes me feel weird. That's the best I could describe it.

Super cool. Looks like someone played with a lot of LEGOs growing up.

Makes me want to have more kids just to build more bunk beds.

faux, but I like it! I think it would look great to have an entire wall covered with reclaimed wood. great tip as well @ sam @ woodflooringtrends.com on finding wood to reclaim.

These are awesome. So irreverent & cheeky. At the same time, they are nicely detailed sculptures.

Unfortunately, this looks like 8 shipping containers stacked on top of each other. The idea is pretty cool, but the result usually ends up looking contrived and the cost not so affordable.

I'd like to see an example of a shipping container home that actually makes sense (i.e. form follows function). Maybe an affordable housing infill project where the containers are arranged in such a way as to afford privacy in a small footprint using cheaper materials. Or maybe a glorified shed that is more cost effective than the modern sheds you see available online. I remember seeing one example where shipping containers were used to fill in a narrow space between buildings. That made sense.

As it is, the interior space is pretty nice. Airy and loft/office building/modern like. The bedrooms a bit claustrophobic. The exterior not so attractive. I feel bad for the neighbors.

I believe this is a Rummer home. I love the exposed wood ceiling and the color combination of cedar, dark beams and white walls. Beautiful.

I love the combination of modern and warm. Love the light and the landscaping. I think lush landscaping makes this kind of house work.

Don't hate because they have money. As long as AT doesn't become Elle Decor or Architectural Digest, the occasional "I am the 1%" post is fine by me. It's good inspiration/idea generation for the rest of us.

Do. not. go overboard. Most of these guys clearly did. Maybe stack firewood in one column or row, not all 16? I will admit, I considered filling up my fireplace with wood, but [1] spiders and [2] it is totally non-functional. We already have enough spiders. Yikes.

I love the built in look of #1 and #3. The others a practical, but look a little messy?

don't do it. put a TV where you can actually watch it comfortably, at eye-ish level.

why did this trend ever happen? *scratching my head*

Dysfunctional Decoration

My beef with "designers" will always be anything done just for looks with no function or sentimentality associated to it. Everything has it's place and looks good in the right context. However, it looks hokey when you have a nautical theme and don't know how to sail or use books to decorate and never read. It's just lame. Arranging books by color? How the hell are you going to actually find anything? Lame.

MCM is way. over. done. But I still have a weakness for new pieces I've never seen before.

Hollywood Regency was never in. People who thought it was in were crazy.

DIY is legit. It's better than buying books from the fleamarket because you like the color of the binding.

first impressions; expensive, bold, feminine. even though it is not my cup of tea, i love to see when people just go for it. you are happier with the outcome in the end.

@ artfemme11: after buying bertoia chairs and getting back aches, i realized these things are not for sitting. and yes! the eames chairs are for sitting, but not perching. i'm using them for dining chairs right now and many guests have had the chair slip out beneath them... not fun. i've learned to pay attention to comfort and am very happy with my lounge chairs and sofas.

aesthetic based on functional form. like post and beam architecture, the function is the form and it is beautifully simple or simply beautiful. there is an authenticity to it that i find very attractive. several styles fall into this mold; japanese modern, scandi/danish modern, mcm to name a few.

and yes, the warmness sets mcm apart from the cold and bold modern aesthetic.

rather than growing to like this style, i believe i have found the style i was always drawn too. i believe i will enjoy it even after it falls out of favor with hipsters.
