My fiancé and I don't even have wall space in useful places in our kitchen but we do have a huge window right beside the stove, so we cut rebar (for reinforcing concrete) to the same size as the window and then hung pots, pans, lids, spatulas etc, and some herbs in those white egg-shaped pots from ikea in the window. It was the perfect space solution and looks great. We still get lots of light because the rebar is widely spaced (each square is about 8 square inches). you are definitely not crazy. this seems like a very wise decision to me! i agree with all the posters who say that it looks like it's built to last, and definitely has a lot more character than the one you got. it's also probably MUCH better than the urban outfitters one. their stuff is not of the most amazing quality... this post makes me nervous! i've pretty much done exactly what you recommend (except for the salad spinner- great idea!) for years... and even so, eventually (no idea how careful i am) they always get messed up. Because of this history of failure I now dry clean every couple of months and they stay perfect. How To: Hand Wash a Cashmere Sweater |

Oh my god- LAUNDRY in my building! I forgot what it was like to lug mountains of laundry more than three blocks! We thought it would be worth the compromise for a garage but I'm less sure every week! What's on Your "Next Apartment" Checklist? |

I've used it to make the shrimp in this recipe and they were by far the best I've ever had: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Summer-Garden-Salad-with-Chili-Garlic-Shrimp-232547?mbid=ipapp What Can I Do With Thai Chili Garlic Sauce? Good Questions |

My fiancée showed me this post because your house reminded her so much of one of my recent projects (I'm a contractor). It was a 1 1/2 story in Bloor West Village and the layout was identical to yours. We removed the wall between the living and dining room because it wasn't load-bearing and renovated everything else, including the fireplace. There isn't any furniture in these photos, and I know you said you don't want open concept, but I thought it might be interesting for you to see what we did anyway.http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150336635412597.394433.307256972596&type=1 How to Lay Out Living Room without Removing Fireplace? I like it! It does achieve what you'd like it to. I currently have a very cramped kitchen that I may try the same thing with. Before & After: Creating an Airy Dining Room |

I also make one book per year, though if we do some travelling that year I'll make a book just for that trip too. The smaller size of Apple's iPhoto books are elegant and not too expensive-- a 100 page book costs about $50. I looked at a couple of other book-making systems online and didn't find any of them as cheap or nice as the Apple ones (the ones from Pinhole Press are admittedly nicer, but also more expensive). Im a contractor -- I've had to scrape ceilings that were painted -- and it was awful, arm burning work, because as someone said, They no longer absorb the srayed Water used to soften the popcorn. Please don't paint it, as it is likely someone will eventually want to scrape it. I think 'beyourownsaviour' has it right: your landlord may be thrilled that you want to scrape.
