When recently helping an elderly relative the fire service where I live came to visit. They said you should always take your keys with you inside your house - and never leave them near a door or window. Taking the keys with you means that if there's a fire you can unlock a window (if you keep yours locked) and jump out (if it is safe to do so), or you can throw the keys to the fire service or someone outside so they can help rescue you.
And you should never leave them near a door or window as it makes your house an easy target for burglars.
But always knowing where your keys is, is a good idea!
