Vodka Cran. Short, or tall with soda. Hard to screw up, and there's at least always Absolut.

I wish whiskey/gingerale could be a safe fallback but unfortunately there are a fair number of bars out there that don't stock gingerale- and they won't tell you, just do the 'sprite with a splash of coke and bitters' nonsense. I'm not a snob and am game for well liquor most of the time.

Happy to see the same fridge and the same kitchen chairs. It might be 'safe' but its well executed and a huge improvement!

I do like a white kitchen- It seems more classic to me than wood. I guess this is probably because I grew up in a 1950s Cape Cod style house with white and yellow (and later white and... white) painted kitchen cabinets.

Well, I think its safe to assume that the windows were replaced. The old windows had wide frames, mullions, and had knick knacks stuck in front of them. New windows that have maximum glass area WOULD make a difference.

I also think that this photo was taken at the ultimate ideal perfect time of day, on a perfect sunny day, for best effect.

I only shop at two grocery stores- Market Basket and Trader Joes.

A lot of Trader Joes produce is overpriced for what it is. Market Basket are a no frills (no loyalty card, 1970s store decor, no union) New England supermarket chain that plain ole' ROCKS. HUGE selection, including tons of flavors of Polar Seltzer. Great bakeries, and the one near my work happens to have the BEST mark down bakery items I've ever seen- totally fresh french bread for .35 cuz it broke in half? Perfectly soft fancy 'ancient grains' bakery bread a day away from its expiration for... .35! Produce is generally good and the produce managers are (I hear) willing to order special things for you. They do tend to pre-package some by the lb produce stuff, which can be annoying, especially with stuff like fresh ginger that I only want a 4 inch piece of at a time, not 3/4 a pound!

There are certain things I shop for at Trader Joe's- they would never be my 'primary' supermarket though at this point I think I spend more money there weekly than at Market Basket. Trader Joe's catfood is great- .69 for no-byproducts no-corn gluten wet food! Its better quality than Iams (the best you can get at MB) for half the price.

My other options, btw, are Stop & Shop (wayyy overpriced, total time sucks of stores with their giant book/magazine/seasonal sections, and crap produce, plus they don't seem to have actual staffed fish counters anymore), or Shaws (also overpriced, but good international sections, and a good bakery, usually the stores are pretty low-key- not a lot of shoppers) plus various small markets like Foodmaster and Hannafords. There are a few Super WalMarts with grocery but they are plain AWFUL, I don't trust them at all for perishables.

Oh, the post said all that. Ha. Thats what I get for paying more attention to the comments than the text. (I'm mostly here for the pictures!)

The Shakers made some pretty clever things. I like the clothes-pegs all around the room thing, too, with candle holders and such that you can hang from them as well.

Which Craft Supplies Should DIY-ers Always Have on Hand? Good Questions

Focused on paper crafting but drifts towards 'household projects' and

- blank cardstock in various sizes / colors; vellum is also nice to have on hand
- blank stickers in various sizes / formats (these few things I buy on sale/clearance and store in a small file box)
- good cutting tools, including a self healing mat and triangle or t-square in addition to a metal ruler, small Olfa break-off knife (handier and safer than Xacto) and a pair of scissors reserved for fabric & ribbon ONLY.
- a 'bone folder' if you work with paper a lot
- velcro!
- wood glue
- lightweight drill/driver (pilot holes are a crafty girls best friend), hand tools, I recommend small vice-grips and needle nose pliers for taking things apart. A rubber mallet is good to have too.
- unbleached white cotton string/yarn. I have a big spool of it and its so versatile- I've crocheted with it, trussed chickens with it, tourniquet-clamped chair legs with it, wrapped gifts with it, etc
- ribbon, there's never been a roll of ribbon I've regretted buying.
- markers, need not be fancy. I don't use them lots but when I do I'm very glad I have a box of Mr Sketch!

Unfinished legs are easy to come by online- there MAY be an issue with metric vs US bolt threads, but there are a few solutions (such as buying proper metric 'hanger bolts' and replacing the bolts in the legs; or screwing on US threaded plates to screw the legs into.)

Here's a look at my own leg-redo that I submitted to Ikeahackers! http://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/06/little-country-for-kilippan.html

I've Sharpied a few wee LEDs. One I think of off hand is my laptop speakers.... its very distracting to me when trying to watch a movie or something. I need to do something about my router and modem- I'm thinking about mounting them on the wall with the lights facing towards the floor.

I use the Sleep Cycle app too, but don't tuck it under my sheet. I didn't realize you were supposed to do that. It goes face down next to my head. I'm probably going to get brain cancer, but hey, at least getting up for work has been easier.

Common Items as Unusual Bedside Tables

I'm living alone for the first time in a while- its been SO worth it, even though its more expensive and I have less amenities then in my shared 3 bedroom apartment.

Living alone is good for both self indulgence AND self dicipline. There's one one else to blame for the messes!

I do enjoy leaving piles of magazines and mail all over the place, not sharing a fridge, being able to keep my prescription medication in my actual bathroom cabinet, never coming home to no-toilet paper or arguing about who uses up all the paper towels, and, yes, walking around with no pants on. :)

I have a white quilt as a bedcover and a throw at the end of the bed is pretty much MANDATORY. Right now its a black & colorful granny square afghan my great-grandmother made. It ties in with my sheets (a rotation of colorful solids), and provides a safe place to drop my purse, shopping, etc. (I live in a studio and the bed is near the entry). It also protects the bed from my darling cats.

Best things about throws at the foot of your bed-
- size doesn't matter, you can use 'throws' or 'twin size' blankets on a full size bed
- or if you want to hand-make an afghan or quilt, you don't have to make a giant 90x90 one!
- rotation of the same throw- I can refold mine a few times to get a 'clean' (no cat hair) side before having to wash it
- rotation of style- easy to have more than one and switch it out

Easy Bedroom Color: Add a Throw at the End of the Bed

I am losing my love of cooking due to my lack of counter space. My room itself isn't TINY per say- its large enough to have a drop leaf table, two chairs, and my (tiny) sewing machine table in it, but the kitchen part is gally style all along one wall, with one drawer, two eighteen inch wide areas of counter on either side of the sink, four narrow base cabinets and four very HIGH shallow old fashioned (circa 1918) upper cabinets. I've had to cut down on my cooking supplies significantly.

Washing dishes as I go is really a challenge for me- I always have a sinkful. I regret buying a dish drainer (mine is suspended across the sink so it doesn't use counter space), I think what I really need is an across-the-sink chopping board. Ikea don't seem to carry one anymore- does anyone have any suggestions for one (preferrably wood or bamboo) that is not super expensive?

re rolling kids: when I was a kid we had metal things that hooked on beween the mattress and boxed spring to keep up safe when we first moved into our 'big kid' beds. I was so scared of my 'big girl' bed and having a whole bedroom to myself when we moved to a larger house, my parents also let me keep my toddler bed mattress on the floor under my bed, and then we would push my bed against the wall, so on one side I was blocked by the wall, and on the other I had a mattress to fall on. Then in the morning we'd reverse it and I'd make up my pretty white eyelet lace bedspread and arrange my 14 dolls on top.

I don't recall ever actually falling out of bed. I'm sure I was most scared of being alone- I had shared my room with my younger brother up until then (I was not quite 5 when this moved happened.)

Great post. It doesn't take much to make my wee apartment 'a mess'... right now I have an unmade bed, pjs on the floor, open sliding closet door, dissarrayed sofa, laptop speakers on arm of sofa, two coffee cups and one glass in my field of view right now, snacks on the floor by the sofa, mail and (used) cloth napkins on my kitchen table, and a sink overflowing with dishes. Oh, and probably cat hair on my rug, but I can't see it in the dark. :) Its hard to motivate myself to get started cleaning- especially with the dishes! Keeping my floor clean is easy, clear everything into the closet and vac that cat hair, which I manage to do 3 times a week even when I let everything ELSE 'go'....

Getting Into and Out of a Real Mess
3/16/12 6:43 PM

I've lived in many crooked old houses and I've found that putting a rug under a desk chair usually does the trick.

I think the plastic under-desk mats are meant to make it easier to roll around on wall to wall carpeted rooms?

Or ditch the desk chair and get a chair without wheels, but put some really good floor protectors on it.

Next time you're at a hardware store look for a pack of "shims"- they cost $2 for 16 or 20 wooden shims that are meant for installing windows, cabinets etc but also are indispensable for leveling furniture in older houses. They're easy to trim to size and paint to blend in with the furniture.

I actually had an issue once with a crooked floor and TV stand on wheels that liked to creep towards the center of the room- I ended up nailing shims to the floor under the front wheels to act like those mail-truck wheel blocks. :)

Since then I've acquired a set of round brown plastic things that go under table legs, which work well under castered furniture- they are under the front legs of my (castered 1930s) kitchen table.
