my design business is based on re-styling and re-purposing what the client already owns which usually includes a lot of crafty diy solutions. rarely does the client appreciate the time, labor & materials required to turn something from drab to fab. hopefully this post will give potential clients a better understanding that the creative process is a billable good.

Interior Designers: Reality Shows vs. Reality

Pulling off a stoop sale in Manhattan is fairly challenging, but for the novice it could have been a disaster. My friend and I spent a lot of time preparing and at the end of the day made a bundle.

A few things I might add - especially for city sellers:
have a water bowl w/ dog treats available. Will draw the dog walkers
being an interior decorator i was able to offer design suggestions when someone was contemplating a find. if this isn't your forte (although you probably have an interest as you are reading apartment therapy.) tell the potential buyer why you fell in love w/ the piece to begin w/

i wrote a how to blog based on the sale:

my first blog post ever was on customizing IKEA furniture based on my own need to personalize the functional, but basic pieces. i probably put more time, effort and possibly money than the original piece was worth, but the final product is show stopping and truly a reflection of my taste and style.

i fear for the day at the day i am able to upgrade to a better quality of furniture because this piece is one of my favorite craft projects.

what a great apartment! love the art collection.
you mention a clutter problem which is difficult to pin point in the photos, but i noticed the bedroom could benefit from a little organization, underneath the night stand...

my father disposed boxes of vintage christmas ornaments when he moved from my childhood home w/ his new wife. The ornaments were from the 30's through the 60's given to us from our surrogate grandmother (family housekeeper). i bristle every time i see an ornament collection at a flea market or vintage store.

jon,
you're a doll - not in a plastic kid robot way!
well, if you ever need a little interior re-styling to maximize your collections and contain the clutter - hit me up.
however, i think you do a fine job w/o professional assistance.
xxoo.

jon,
if you go to my website:
http://www.apartmentjeanie.com and click on the hgtv video - it is a tour of my apt from 5 yrs ago. a lot of my collections are stored at my father's b/c i don't have the space and the art work has since been increased, but i think you'll get the overall effect.
btw, a friend had sent me the link to your apt b/c she couldn't believe there was someone else like me out there - also, i posted it to the apartmentjeanie fan page on fb.
rock on,
j.

umm, so i think i have found my style soulmate - down to having a bulldog w/ the same color and markings. i love adam and am waiting patiently until he personally bestows a chandelier upon me - i have one last ceiling fixture as a hold out. (his house is beyond amazing.)
did you see his show @ corey helford? jan is my favorite gallerist.
seriously, i am completely gob-smacked to have found someone w/ my identical taste and aesthetic.
