We kept everything white and decorate with placemats, centerpieces, napkins etc. I just think white is more versatile and allow me infinite creativity without buying a ton of different dishes. I do like the idea of mixing patterns or brightly colored solids with white dishes though.

I probably wouldn't use it. I take a glass jar to Whole Foods and refill from the bulk aisle. When that isn't available I'll buy a huge tin of it and use that to fill my glass jar.

I store my salt in a wide short ball jar. It's easy to use hands to get a pinch of it. I wouldn't store my spices in jelly jars since they are too big. I wouldn't use the spices quickly enough and I don't have room to store all those jars.

Our house stays pretty cool and despite the pile of blankets on our bed its frigid when we first tuck in for the night. I've thought about an electric blanket but I think an electric mattress pad would make more sense. The cost is what's stopping us, instead I plan on making a rice heating pad.

I love decorating with plants. Succulents are my favorites as they are so structural in appearance and the varieties are endless.

I know more cities are exploring options including sugar since the price of rock salt is getting so high. It's nice to know that they may end up being greener in the process.

I'm leery of washing my hands with water I couldn't wash my face or teeth with but it is a great way to save room.

If you have a window with good southern exposure you could do without the light but it's still a good thing to have. The plants will grow more and be stronger for having the light. Be careful about plants being to cold (to close to a window) or to hot. I bought a small heat pad especially for seed growing and it works great. It has small power draw and can be used again and again. Delicate seeds should be watered from underneath. I use the recycled plants and place them in a large tub or deep lid.

For everyday we use cloth napkins and we have a small set of nice cocktail napkins but for a large party I would rent. If it's for a big special occasion party you could turn the napkins into a quilt or other decoration when the party was over so you aren't left with a bunch of napkins.

I prefer going to the farmer's market. That way I know I'm getting products that I will use and the farmer's market season is usually the same as the CSA.

If you are worried about getting unusual food most CSAs have recipes lists on their websites.

Uncommon Goods is another place to find eco friendly and upcycled products. Their products are a bit funkier but still beautiful.

There are two of us and we average one bag of trash every 2-3 weeks. We've been trying to cut down on packaged items to reduce our waste and we are able to participate in curbside recycling which helps a lot.

I regret going through a bakery for my cake. We kept the design super simple. Three layers, chocolate buttercream frosting and a very simple green leaf/vine design. It could easily have been made at home. We also had far to much cake, so I would also recommend being conservative on how much cake you purchase. You can see a picture of my cake here

Don't get me wrong I loved the look, just not the price tag!

I used to be a big fan of gift certificates because I tend to be a very picky person but now that I tend to shop at small local shops its harder for people to purchase gift cards for stores I frequent. There is always the option to buy a gift visa card which the recipient can use at any store.

We bought our tree from a local tree farm this year, we are forgoing the new (and usually plastic) ornament we get every year. We purchased more of our gifts locally and some were bought used. For each other instead of gifts my husband and I are spending a night out with dinner and a show. There are some more ideas on my blog like handmade gingerbread ornaments.

If it's an item they would use and like then I would buy it otherwise I think you are just adding "green" clutter to someone else's life.

Yeah I agree it's a great office idea, at home I would still find a way to fit a real tree in.

I could see the feathers in a store window holiday display where the theatric element would be ideal. For a home probably not.

I take photos of places I've been and prefer to decorate with those versus a bunch of photos or posters from where I live. That said I have a large framed photo of the Love Statue in Philly that I purchased before I lived in Philly up on my wall. I prefer to take people out to see the city and let them take their own mementos home. Instead of decorating with local flavor I try to feed my guests with local food at home or if we eat out.
