Great post! I find myself frustrated mostly because I'm in a rental - one where I can't put nails in the wall (not supposed to - so all our pictures are hung with that weird velcro/sticky stuff. not easy to change around), we can't paint, the carpet and floors are very retro and the space is small. I also have a fairly tight-wad husband that isn't big on me buying furniture or things for the house. It's hard because I know we won't be here forever and I'd rather save money to spend it on bigger and better things (kitchen renovations? flooring changes? new furniture) when we buy a house. For me it's really about decluttering and rearranging furniture or re-purposing what we already have.

I helped some friends move a few months ago, and though they were not quite organized (or even fully packed!!), they had donuts, coffee and OJ to start the morning and hot dogs, pulled pork, drinks and more snacks at the house for after the move was done. We had lots of people helping, so it was a fun, social event, and helped them out!!

my hubs and i have the same argument. he thinks my couches are super uncomfortable, but they were purchased 3+ years ago for two simple girls living together and are in amazing shape (probably why they don't sit so well - still aren't broken in after all those years). i want to just get new ones. comfort and style. i'm sure we can find something. but right now, we'll settle with what we've got.

i vote buy something new for the new place! maybe put his prized couch in an office, bedroom or hallway (depends on the size i guess) if he doesn't want to part with it.

most of the time: repaint. if it's got a great wood or look to it, than refinish. i think it just depends on the piece and where you see it going. but for me again - 90% of the time i would say paint.

i work at a Knoll dealership. i would say your best bet would be to try to find a dealer and see if they can work with you on how to secure it. they can also help you pick out a cushion that will fit, or you could always have one made. an "authentic" cushion is probably going to cost you around $200 at a base grade fabric. also, the signature of Saarinen should be on the underside of the base if it is truly an S chair. unfortunately i can't find any more info on how it is constructed or parts without contacting someone from the factory.

i like the idea of larger pictures filling up the space - i would even hang them if you could. or if you could paint the shelves, that would be awesome - either white to blend in - or if you could paint the wall behind the shelves (i second using patterned paper or solid paper) to give it some color and interest. also - larger accessories - i agree w/ vertical plants, higher vases or sculptures. or small accessory boxes to hold things in.

if the area is big enough, i would almost split your areas and try to focus on one at a time. figure out the purpose of the space - storage, TV watching/lounging, showcasing fun artwork, chatting/gathering - and design around that. i agree with the first comment that a grouping of pictures/artwork over the couch can make the high ceilings seem less...high. i also like your idea of a console table to the right of the TV. i wouldn't leave that empty - either some artwork, small table, plants or funky bench or chair that you maybe can find at a thrift market or garage sale. or if you entertain a lot, what about some type of mobile cart for drinks or party supplies? if you can paint, then paint!! if not, get some colorful pillows and throws. some artwork or a fun clock or something above the TV would also be nice. your unit is nice but quite short, which looks even shorter next to the high wall. something above it will detract from that.

hope that helps!!
