Food served in cups seems easier for little hands to manage, so I like to do pasta salad in a cup: fun shaped pasta, olives, chopped veggies, maybe some cubed cheese or meat (ham, pepperoni) and a very light vinegar-based dressing (not creamy)or simply salt and pepper. It looks colorful and fun served in a clear cup. Add a crunchy breadstick and some fruit skewers and your'e done! Keep things well chilled 'til the party, you should be fine.

we make Nigella's rocky road crunch bars frequently and love to share them. Always a big hit! And great for casual entertaining. I like to break them into smaller chunks, place a handful in a clear bag and tie it up with ribbon as a special treat for friends.

I remember being hungry around the clock with my newborns. always famished. I would have loved a sandwich or a bowl of soup or hearty snacks. Perhaps a few parenting magazines to browse while nursing, a CD of soothing music, or anything to help a new momma feel pretty on the roughest days: headbands, lip gloss, good hand cream.

Richard Scarry's Best? Story Book Ever. Both of my little boys have been crazy about it. It includes some of his stories published separately, but also pages about the seasons, vehicles, animals, poems for every month of the year. And all those awesome Scarry illustrations. They have never tired of it. http://www.amazon.com/Richard-Scarrys-Storybook-Little-Golden/dp/0307165485/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1296779147&sr=1-4.

Also, they love the Walter Wick I Spy books. Love.

If you are troubled by the situation, then simply don't attend. send a thoughtful card, and perhaps include a small more personal gift for the baby or a gift card. NO need to get overly offended, as to each his own. For example, I offered to host a shower for my neighbor's first baby. She invited over 50 people! Instead of complaining, I just simplified my plans to curb costs. Adapt.

Green salad: mixed greens like romaine, arugula, radicchio with vinaigrette dressing. Simple simple since the main dish is robust. Add some crusty bread. Splurge on a fabulous dessert like cheesecake or tiramisu.

fantastically done with such a budget. realistic expectations, and a pleasant upgrade. $500 is not a lot of money where kitchens are involved. they replaced a countertop! Why are we criticizing their budget here? It is what it is to anyone. Another person might thing $500 is the cost of a lamp.

pulled pork works great in a crock pot, as does rustic beef stew or minestrone soup. Marinara sauce also works in a crock pot and I like to add Costco meatballs to make it heartier. A healthy casserole that freezes well: 4 cups prepared brown rice (cooked with chicken stock instead of water), layered with sliced, sauteed zuchinni, sliced, sauteed red bell pepper, 1 can diced tomatoes, 1 can artichoke hearts (drained), 3 leeks, sliced and lightly sauteed. Top with salt and pepper, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle lightly with parmesan or mozzarella. Bake at 350 until cheese is melted and dish is warmed through.

Perhaps a mirror for some elegance and light, and also maybe 2 or 3 hanging mesh baskets like are often used for fruit--you could adjust the hanging length to meet your needs and use them for produce, spices, dish towels, anything to too heavy. I'd avoid canned goods or anything that tends to spill/leak easily.

measuring cups or paper cups and plates, placing sofa cushions on the floor for climbing and rolling, hiding objects easy for him to find, and he's not too little for wooden puzzles with simple shapes to take out and put back in. vocabulary flashcards also entertained my little guys on my lap at that age. Also learning to roll a ball back and forth, and a good time to introduce a first riding or push/pull toy of some kind.

check your local public schools. often near the end of the year they offer used book sales. We've found some fantastic classic treasures there for pennies. Also, check with pre-school teachers and local parent-educator groups (check for a Parents as Teachers non-profit in your area) to see if they participate in the scholastic book program, and sometimes you can get real gems for just a couple of bucks. Often paperback, but sometimes hardback, too. Sometimes we even find great used books via Amazon.com.

I think white beadboard is classic looking and gender neutral, and have even decided to put it in my 4 year old's room. It gets only a little natural light, so I thought the white would brighten things up. Plus, it's great for adding strategic hooks for jackets and hats, etc. So long as the colors and patterns in the room are masculine, just leave the beadboard.
