I was just thinking the same thing about the Macs. Especially the MacBooks (burn out within a year or two) and the iMacs (go obsolete within a few years). After my fourth Mac burned out I realized I couldn't afford to keep buying them. AT makes it seem like having a Mac is de rigueur to be considered stylish, right alongside your "Keep Calm" ephemera and a color-coded bookshelf. Ugh. Foxes are great, but I feel like this trend has already come and gone. It's time to do away with the cutesy animal decor please. So Foxy: Put a Fox on It in 2012? |

I had an ugly old sofa that I reupholstered myself. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, EVER. I was sliced, blistered, scraped, scuffed, and thoroughly exhausted at the end of it. I suppose it would have been easier with a professional set of tools (I did most of it with an old sewing machine and a cheap staple gun) but I will never try to do it again. I agree with JJwyatt37 too. I fully support not wanting vermin or mold in your house (and animals, if you're terribly allergic) but after that it all seems like cake. Look at these pictures for a dose of reality, please. I Would Never Rent an Apartment That… Reader Survey |

The City Hostel in Seattle should be on this list! The hostel serves as a showcase for Seattle artists, each of whom got a chance to use the rooms themselves as canvases. I should add that it's comfortable and squeaky clean, the owners and staff are amazing, and the location is perfect--close to everything, but not in the middle of the market which can be sketchy. (I should add that I don't work there! I stayed there for a few weeks last year while relocating to Seattle.) Oh.my.god. That takes some serious creative insight to be able to transform a trailer (I've spent a lot of time in many!) into something that, from the photos, is completely indistinguishable from a vintage, stand-alone home. Well done! Charmaine's Radically Improved Two-Tone Kitchen |

I had the same meltdown-confusion the first couple times I went, but once I got the layout down and discovered the best way to get through it, I would spend whole days there. The displays in the upstairs showroom are full of interesting decorating ideas, and the inexpensive food they serve there is suprisingly delicious. The tools list includes a hacksaw, circular saw, chop saw and a file? I would hardly call that an easy intro to DIY. I made better-looking and far easier flexy shelves with just a cordless drill and a wrench. Home Depot cut the plywood for me. Build Your Own Industrial Side Tables |
