The only arc lamp that here doesn't look like junk in person is the Flos Arco lamp. $3k is a retarded price for a reproduction, even if its an authorize repro. Whiteonwhite.com or modernindesigns.com sell reproductions that look identical for under $500. Unless you have $3k to burn, and must have the one that's made in Italy, go with one of the other reproductions.

These Serge Mouille lamps are beautiful, but the prices are just stupid for mass produced reproductions. The reproduction floor lamp retails for $7,300 at DWR and are stamped and numbered if that matters to you. Or a $575 version at Organic Modernism (In person, the cheaper one actually looks like it's made of better materials.) http://www.organicmodernism.com/index.php?p=127 . I'd love to find a comparably priced ceiling or wall lamp.

At $575, the Nova 1 reading light is pricy, but looks worth-it in person. That would be the one I'd splurge on.

If I wanted the Bracket Lamp (#3,) I'd just miter and paint the wood myself for a couple bucks. Twisted fabric cord would look better than the plain cord pictured, plus a socket, plug and nice edison bulb would all be around $30.

The Nelson lamp doesn't look good as a wall light.

Light 7 looks like it belongs in a dorm room.

The Ikea light (8) would look great painted in other colors. High temperature paint would work for that.

I saw this on a guy pictured in Hamptons magazine this past summer. Been wondering where to find this!

You mean to say that you can't tear yourself away from your family and friends for a few minutes each day to clean and maintain your surroundings? You sound that you don't believe in dusting or regular upkeep. Any choice of finish is going to require touch-ups to some degree. I have a similar style as shown in these pictures. Yes, painted steps do develop a patina, like any wood surface will. But it's also super easy to cover up nicks and match new boards to the old ones. Keeping things looking good is not nearly as difficult as you're making it out to be.

Great color choices, and I love the blue sofa. Thank gawd the salmon-ey colors are gone! But there's an awful lot of seating for that small space. It looks like the type of seating you'd arrange into a circle for a therapy session. I'd probably remove the green/white highback chairs, and replace with a chaise or comfortable bench.

Most newspapers are better digitally. Especially since they're updated in real-time. The portability of tablet newspapers is also much better on the subway.

This is a great post. Definitely re-post it next May. Here are some more...

- Do not set up a makeup workstation in the bathroom. When you're not using it, the only thing that should remain in the bathroom is your towel and a toothbrush.
- Do not bring pets unless they are specifically invited
- If you smoke in a house of non smokers, smoke far outside and discard your butts. Air yourself out before coming back inside.
- If you have children and the people inviting you don't, then don't assume they're invited
- Make breakfast or occasionally go into town and grab breakfast. Don't wake up and go "what's on the menu for today?"
- Keep your stuff in your bedroom and out of the living areas.
- If it's for a week or more, plan one or two days on your own exploring the area. It's good to get a break, even from people you love.
- Plan to have your own transportation. If it ends up not being necessary, you can always cancel the rental.
- Look up things that you'd like to go and see in town. It's often something that your hosts would like to see also. And it takes some of the pressure off of them to constantly entertain.
- Help strip the bed and clean the bathroom when it's time to leave.

This stuff seems obvious. But you'd be amazed at how many people don't understand the basics.

Definitely a worthwhile update. The layout and the cabinets are a smart change. But the Ikea lighting and the door pulls seem a little off. Those are two things that would have been good to source someplace other than Ikea.

Great place. That yellow lamp is insane! I'm going to be looking out for one just like it. I disagree with those who posted about the small size of the TV. I went for years without one at all. People don't move to NYC to sit at home and watch TV.

Great style! It's hard to believe that you're from the 'burbs! (Joke of course) Love the cafe lights in the kids room. Looks like a fun place to live!

Definitely favorited.

The color choices are nice, but this is very grandma. Plates on a wall in a bedroom? How does one even decide to do that? I hope Jerry at least has a garage that he can use as his own retreat.

Love the living room. Amazing wood floors in the bedroom. The bedroom could use fewer retro dust collectors that are crammed onto the night stand. Though it's a rental and a thorough renovation is unlikely, the kitchen looks like it's in desperate need of some TLC and doesn't match the taste level of the rest of the apartment.

There are always those people who cry "it's a rendering" "too staged" blah blah blah. Those people can vote for places that look more homely. I think this is awesome. Thoughtful clean design is always better than a space with lots of intentionally distressed retro-nostalgic knick knacks from Urban Outfitters. I find this to be more authentic and honest than a place that a 30 year-old has designed to look like grandmas cottage.

Sick of polished granite. Granite with a honed finish has the industrial look of concrete with a smoother and more consistent texture.

I love good quality stainless refrigerators and ovens, but hate the cheap stuff that is only stainless on the front. Lower end GE, LG and Samsung are the worst offenders. I prefer dishwashers to have the same finish as the cabinets so they're not seen.

As for mid century modern, it's my favorite style. But it's best when mixed with other elements. Even adding industrial, tikki or beach elements outside or some classic, more traditional pieces inside makes a huge difference. Just copying the DWR catalog will make your home look like the UN building or a scandinavian airport.

Wow. It looked like it was too far gone, that I wouldn't have been surprised if they had decided to paint it. Some serious thought, time and work went into a correct restoration. Amazing result!
