This is the only way I cook rice too. My Filipino mother taught me how to do this.

My family has been cable-free since January of last year. While we miss watching breaking news (the tsunami in Japan comes to mind), we've cut our cable bill from $135 a month to $45 for just internet. So we're not completely in the dark about new shows, we rely heavily on Hulu+, the occasional Amazon show subscription (Walking Dead) and Netflix every few month to binge watch recently released shows (Breaking Bad's last season was just made available).

As for habits, I don't automatically turn on the tv for background noise as soon as I arrive home for work and we've taken up walking in the evenings instead of plopping down in front of the television after dinner.

I would like to see how much was spent overall on the remodel. "Very limited budget" is different for everyone.

Prior to moving in with my boyfriend-now-husband, I

-Peed with the door open.
-Put my dirty dishes in the refrigerator when I couldn't wash them immediately.
-Ate straight from the refrigerator or sometimes over the sink. (It reduced the amount of dirty dishes!)
-Took up the entire bed

I boil it for 10 minutes in salted water, rinse and then steam it over sieve for 20 minutes. It always turns out light and fluffy. I love using it especially in fried quinoa: http://myburningkitchen.com/2011/01/27/quinoa/

IKEA sells sieves that fit perfectly over a medium saucepan with holes small enough to hold them in.

Since giving up traditional cable and relying on Amazon, Hulu, etc., we rarely turn on our traditional t.v. in the living room. The last time was to watch a Netflix DVD but I figure that we'll soon be cancelling that service.

My mom always used them to make juice, mix with soy sauce to dip fried fish in and to squeeze over pancit.

Tried them and while they weren't great, they were 100% better than the deep fried corn-on-the-cob they also offered at the fair. And the chocolate cover corn dog was just disgusting.

My husband is always disappointed by Apple's lack of support for older operating systems. Classic environment was his savior to run Freehand -- the software which he does ALL of his graphics. He's currently on his third G4 scouring Craigslist when the computer fails.

Sometimes newer isn't always better.
