The room is too busy for me. It feels as if there is no theme or guiding concept - just interesting and attractive things placed together. How to Hang an Art Collection Style by Emily Henderson |

I bought a house with a smallish kitchen that I am remodeling, bit by bit. At first I wanted to blow out a wall and do an open concept thing, like I've seen on those HGTV shows - then I realized that I don't want people to watch me cook, and I don't want my cooking food odors all over the house. My ideal kitchen is not a show piece, but a work place for me. I want it, usable, neat, and pretty. AT Survey: How Large Is Your Kitchen? |

Both - pretty things go in 1 of 2 cute ceramic containers that have a plain shape. Beat up stuff goes in a drawer. Dust is not a problem - I rinse them before use, if they have been used recently, or with a quick soap wash if they have been there longer. Other stuff - appliances, cookbooks, etc. - is hidden away off of the counter. Fresh fruit goes on the counter, from time to time. Storing Kitchen Utensils Drawer or Container? |

I watch it (not often, anymore) and am struck by the lack of minorities on the show. The cost of the projects also floored me at times - they don't even try to relate what they are doing to the average or even above average home owner. They aim for the very affluent. They got me interested in home improvement and remodeling - now I watch DIY and HGTV. The costs are more in line with what I can afford - usually- and the faces are more diverse. 'This Old House' was not comfortable working with minorities, it seemed. Oh well, I did enjoy them for quite a while. What Does PBS' This Old House Mean to You? |
