My preferred ranking:

1. Toilet trained - I used http://www.citikitty.com but there are other kits and DIYs floating around online. Best overall for easy cleaning, odor control and practicality. And you already have a toilet. Yes, in a small place they may use your only toilet, but hopefully you already keep it clean. Having wipes nearby is great in any bathroom, in case you are expecting guests, and so that any accidents (they are surprisingly rare) are quickly addressed.

2. Breeze System http://www.breezeforcats.com/
Since I'm still training multiple cats and need to keep a box, they use this. It's the least stinky option of litters. The pads are covered by a plastic grille which holds the clay* pellets above it. A pull out drawer for the pad makes changing them fast and easy. 3. Blue Naturally Fresh Cat Litter http://bluebuffalo.com/healthy-home/naturally-fresh-pellet-litter3. Made from walnut shells, better for the environment, no silica dust, no strip mining and less trackable.

4. World's Best Multiple Cat Clumping Litter. It tracks, but they all do. Works great and has no added scent to it. They do offer lavender and pine scented versions. I prefer to keep scent out of the equation by just keeping the box clean.

4 Cat's Pride Premium Scoopable (Flushable in non-septic systems). This one has the least offensive perfume to it, clumps well and can be flushed in most systems. If you have to go with a clumping clay litter, this is the best.

If you can be patient and willing to deal with the inconvenience and cleanup of toilet training, it really is awesome. Might be odd to see your cat hop up on the seat to pee & poop (and funny) but not having to scoop, clean, wash or sweep up litter once they adjust is fantastic. Some will worry about guests and cleanliness. I can assure you that the toilet is way cleaner than a box full of clay, urine and poo. That said, it's helpful in any bathroom to have cleaning wipes handy - and if there are any pet accidents (none so far from the cats) you have a fast cleanup.

I shall now contemplate the scary thought that I know way too much about litter and yet define myself as "not a cat lady."
