I don't know what your budget is but French General (www.frenchgeneral.com) has been doing feed sack pillows for years. They have a big selection of hemp items of all kinds, and they do custom orders as well.

wow, I love this place. it's comfy and cool and looks like you could come over for a party and stay for a week. I totally disagree about there being too many mid-century items, at least they have a personal approach to it, unlike SO many houses I see on AT. No Eames lounger, no Bertoia wire chairs, no Noguchi coffee table...thank god!

and I don't get chastising them for being a couple living in a big house...I don't see any evidence in the photos that they are wasteful consumers (quite the opposite, considering all the vintage items they are using) and you don't know anything about their life! Maybe they have huge families that come visit, maybe they are planning on having 10 kids...you don't know, so stop with the shaming.

Wow, a post on AT that doesn't use the editorial "we"!

Hooray for you, Heather! Way to claim your first-person singular pronoun!

I agree, the use of the "editorial we" is so silly on this site. Because the posts are credited to individual bloggers, and when their content is so often very personal rather than stating a collective opinion, it's totally awkward.

Mark Twain said it best: "Only kings, presidents, editors, and people with tapeworms have the right to use the editorial 'we'."

Another good option for apartment dwellers are tool lending libraries. I used to use the Berkley one when I lived in the Bay Area. Here's a list of tool libraries on wikipedia:

I wish more cities had them!

As a professional seamstress, I can attest to the importance of piping for a professional finish! However I have to mention that most professionals will tell you that piping should be covered with fabric strips cut on the bias, not on the grain as shown in the tutorial above. Bias piping gives a smoother appearance when going around curves and corners, and looks better when enclosed in a seam such as a pillow.

This tutorial http://sewing.about.com/od/techniques/ss/cordingpiping.htm
describes the process really well.

happy sewing!

I have that side table, and several other pieces from the same line! It's by Lane, the "Acclaim" line from the 60's designed by Andre Bus. It got pretty collectible a few years ago.

I want that coffee pot though.

I once hid in a poison oak bush as a kid during a game of hide-and-seek. Being a hippie child I was mostly naked, I believe. I got scratched all over by the branches, the oil got into the scratches, I had a severe allergic reaction and ended up in the emergency room!

If there's any kids who might come into contact with it, I'd definitely try to take it out.

The best plants are the ones I grab for free! I'm amazed how many people throw out plants that only need a little water and some new soil. I've taken plants out of green recycling bins, off street corners, and even pulled over at construction sites where plantings are being ripped out. I always carry a few trash bags in the trunk in case I see something that needs a home.

The free section on craigslist is also an awesome source.

I heard a great story on npr once about hotel maids, and how they didn't realize that they basically worked out all day while doing their jobs. Once they were educated on how many calories they were burning doing things like changing beds and hauling laundry around, they started losing weight without making any other changes to their lifestyle.

So now I try to think of vacuuming as cardio, rather than a chore!

alexandra, I believe the plant is a type of succulent called Kalanchoe. There are lots of different variations, my fave is the one often referred to as the "chandelier plant"...they produce those little red bell flowers and hummingbirds love them!

Mary H, one of the best things about succulents is how easy it is to make more of them! They will grow from the smallest clippings, in the case of some such as jade plants, all it takes is one leaf to grow a new plant.

You don't need to put them in water at all, on the contrary I would recommend letting clippings dry out for a few days before sticking them in soil. If the cuttings don't have a chance to "scab over", the ends can rot and they won't produce roots.

Peanut, I did the same thing when I was a costumer! If you use equal parts really bad vodka and water, it's actually cheaper than Febreeze, totally effective, and doesn't leave any fragrance behind.

And believe me, I'm a lush...obviously you aren't going to use Grey Goose for these purposes, but like Goodnightdean, I always seem to end up with half a bottle of crappy booze in the cupboard after parties.

I know it's totally weird, but living in California my whole life and having woken up to so many earthquakes in the middle of the night, I am totally paranoid about sleeping in the buff. I can't help but picture myself being pulled out of rubble by burly firemen on the 6 o'clock news...and mooning the entire world!

I love these trees! They are all over the UCLA campus and every year when the fruit ripen the trees are filled with wild parrots, who crack the fruit open, which spreads the cotton fluff all over...so cool!

I know they aren't native plants, but I don't care...along with Jacaranda, these trees make LA more gorgeous!
