I would argue that it is quite tricky for an mass retailer to sell exactly the same product as one produced for and sold by an independent seller/artist. The independent artist already has their story baked into their product, which likely can command a higher price.

That said, I'm all about mass retailers embracing brands and products that have a true story, as opposed to just selling "stuff." Our company, Red Clay (www.redclayhome.com), is finding success in connecting artists/designers to a larger marketplace, so that their pieces, and subsequent stories, can be shared by more people.
