If you are a sewer or crafty, you could sew bolsters that fit along the sides and bottom in a fabric that compliments your bedding. Or, cut long strips of plywood or mdf that fit into the sides and bottom and upholster them in a cool fabric. Either way I would use a high density foam inside (or even pool noodles if the right diameter) covered in soft batting to help prevent the mattress from shifting. It could be an interesting custom look!

Just so you know, if you are putting a standard mattress on those slats and you have been sleeping on a box spring mattress combo, your mattress is going to feel quite a bit more firm. If that's an issue, you might want to look for a softer mattress.

I've both painted and stained dressers. The painting is definitely easier. This dresser would look great in a silky gray or a cool turquoise with coral red knobs!

I like to prime with Zinser's oil based primer. Give the surface a quick sand with 100 grit paper. You can fill in the chips in the veneer with wood putty. You can also fill in the existing holes for the knobs with the putty, if you want to change to knobs with different mounting.

I like to use Floetrel (not sure I am spelling it right) in my paint. It is an additive that makes the paint dry smoother, but doesn't change the consistancy of the paint. Use a good brush to minimize brush strokes. 2 coats may be needed.

Once the paint has dried for at least 24 hours, I like to finish with a few coats of wipe on polyurethane to protect the finish and it prevents that stickiness that painted furniture can get when something sits on it for too long.

Love The Lines, But How To Change the Color?
Good Questions

I recommend investing in quality furniture and artwork that you can take with you. We did replace our shower head but plan on taking it with us. We have stored the one that came with the apartment carefully and will put it back in. If fixtures are at the point of needing replacement, consider asking the landlord to pay for part of it. Kate at Censtational Girl has painted '80s style brass fixtures as well.

When refinishing furniture with paint, I always finish it with a polyurethane to protect the paint's finish and avoid that stickiness of paint. I like a wipe-on poly. Just be sure to match the paint's finish with the poly's. For example, a satin poly will negate a glossy paint. Wipe the poly on fairly heavy and give it a few coats.

Great job - I usually go from 120, 220 to 320 to get an even silkier finish. Sanding in between all coats of stain is a must, and especially if you do multiple coats of poly (I usually do a minimum of three coats). Tacky cloths are great to remove any dust in between coats.

I make a healthy version of quiche: eggs, skim milk, fat free feta, tuna, spinach and corn, but bake them in silicone muffin cups (no muffin pan required). They are 190 cals for two and I make them every Sunday night for the week. Then, I just have to pop two of them in my lunch bag for work and keep the silicone muffin cups and bring them home. With a slice of toast and a piece of fruit it is a great breakfast. I ride my bike to work so I eat breakfast at my desk - they are great!
