Yes! I love this post! My husband and I are in our early 40's with 3 children. One child is in college and 2 in high school. We have owned a few homes but have rented more years than owned! Being renters has given us the freedom to move with ease when my husband was relocated across Canada and to Washington DC where we rented a fabulous home in the suburbs of Virginia. Moving back to Vancouver where the real estate market is ridiculous, we have chosen to rent. We can rent a house in a desired neighbourhood for $1000 less than owning that house. So we can't renovate but we have a roof over our head, money in the bank and the freedom to move if life takes us in a different direction. We too get the "hang in there" , shock that we "rent" (like that is a bad thing or somehow we are bad people) from people. Why do we get punished because we are prudent, we save and we live debt free? We have decorated the home the way we would like it and have enjoyed our life in this home, whether we rent or not.

I have always painted the walls, changed out light fixtures and added different draperies to add my own touch to the place. My motto is you can always take that with you {except the painted walls}
Strange they want you to paint it back. I guess it depends on how much the deposit is, if it ends up being the cost of re-painting back, then I would leave the walls.
I ended up helping our previous landlords sell their house as I had painted the walls colours that the buyers loved! They gave me one months rent back for that!
