I've taken a handmade approach to this. If it's something I can possibly make/repurpose vs buy, then I put it on the list. Now, when you work your way down the list and you think about the hours you're going to spend making it, you really think about how much you actually need it. Do you really need more potholders, or will the two you own work out for now. Do you actually need another pair of pajama pants, or was it that that pair at Anthropologie were making you picture your ideal life in a magazine house making perfect organic buckwheat pancakes in the morning? If you really love it, it's worth it, and you'll do it. If it isn't.... You won't. Fighting the Feeling of "Should" |

Generation Y'er here. As a just graduating college student, I'd say that the biggest issue is economic. You've got to have money to get any outside space here, and the community garden by my house has a two year waiting list for a plot. Focusing on container garden heirloom sets, chic assesories, and environmentally friendly fertilizers and soils in small packages is my word of advice. Not everyone needs a 50lb bag of potting soil, sometimes we're just trying to make a terrarium. Where Are the Gen X & Y Gardeners? The Gardenist |

After 4 years I'd skip the culinary route. Either use it to dye, make sachets for your lingerie drawer, or take tea baths. Black tea is fantastic for dry and sunburned skin, and it smells heavenly. Just tie 4 or 5 bags to the spigot so that the water runs over them as the tub fills. How Can I Use Up Old Tea? Good Questions |

I keep Swiss chard, mushrooms, onion, carrots, and celery in my fridge at all times. From these and other ingredients I always have languishing about, I can make a miso soup with fried tofu and soba noodles, a real food tuna casserole, simple sautéed greens on quinoa topped with a poached egg and some Parmesan, a fantastic quiche or omelet, healthy fried rice, or a sautéed sandwich. With the way I cook, and since I buy dry goods in bulk, having those five veggies means I can always make a healthy meal with whatever we have lying about. When I was eight, my mom taught me how to make roast chicken, and she washed it. I decided it was the most disgusting process in the whole world, so when she told me I'd have to do it myself next time I cooked a whole chicken, I promptly refused and said I'd never cook a whole chicken again. And I haven't. And now I find out that I spent money on rotisserie chicken (so that I didn't have to wash the chicken) for YEARS for nothing? This is life changing. I keep the guitars hanging above the sofa, with three of them it makes a nice gallery style look. The amp happens to be a side table next to the bed with a varnished piece of wood on top to protect it from daily life. My proudest DIY happens to be the wall ironing board closet (I live in a 1920's era apartment) that I turned into a hideaway keyboard station. When inspiration strikes, I just open the door and unfold my keyboard out! Display Guitar Equipment in Small Apartment? Good Questions |

My boyfriend and I agree about the over the bed art. We have a 35x45 black and white photo printed on very heavy paper and hung stretched between 4 small hooks attatched by black plastic binder clips. Because of the flexibility of the paper and the lightweight attachment methods there's nothing that would knock us out. :P I also have a small Shanna Murray wall decal that says You Are my Sunshine above my boy's head. My idea is to do a series of small shadowboxes, with a few patches, a picture or two, and then a souvenir as well. The patches could be taped, and then used in a more permanent way when he's older. I had a large collection of "vacation jars" as a child, and making them was my favorite part of each trip. Ideas To Save & Display Patches Good Questions |

@Design in my dreams That mobile is the easiest thing in the world to make. It's a free pattern by Spool sewing, you can google it. I recently helped my seven year old niece make one for her room, and it was finished in a day. It's just hand sewing of the easiest kind, and you make a few birds so you get to practice. If you can sew on a button you can make it. If you really decide that's too much I'll make one for you, I don't have a new baby. You can DM me on twitter at @mendocinostring and we can talk fabrics and prices. My Room: Maya Vancouver, British Columbia |

My best friend and her husband took their newly-adopted baby on a camping trip literally the weekend after they got back from China. What they said made the difference was their "go crib" which is an inflatable travel crib they picked up at rei, and she swears by it. She says it beats packnplays and pea pods by the mile. First of all for fabrics, I would most definitely take a tour by Purl Soho. Not only will you find adorable stuff there, but it's the best place for inspiration! I'd pick up a few Oliver and S patterns while you're there. NYC Shops for Unique, Handmade and Vintage Kids' Items Good Questions |

Depending on the level of redecoration in your parent's house, I would suggest mounting a picture rail, then painting the wall under the picture rail a darker neutral with a lighter neutral above and on the ceiling. This is something that's found often in classic San Francisco houses, and it lends an airy, but still warm and cozy feel to tall ceilings. As an added plus, I'm totally in love with the hook and string method of hanging pictures! It adds a vintage charm to all of your artwork. How To Make Vaulted Ceilings More Inviting? Good Questions |
