Too much to "like", but I'll include my favorite from the first photo- I really like the door color with the gray brick, its really pretty.

That is my last name! Ordinarily, that might not seem special, but because I've never actually met another person aside from my grandparents with my last name I had to do a double take. I'm incredibly jealous of your find! If you ever consider selling that piece or redecorating, I'd love to be in contact.

I understand completely. When my grandmother passed I insisted on keeping the desk she had bought shortly after marrying my grandfather. Its light colored laminate and rather large, but I just couldn't part with it.

As for your desk- I would suggest changing the pulls.
Also, I like the idea of adding a glass top- then you could slip personal photos or notes beneath it or maybe a nice printed wallpaper/ wrapping paper.

You could also decopage the front of the drawers. However, simple changes such as organization, a new chair and a cute lamp might be just as effective in achieving the updated look you so desire. Good luck!
