I guess I need to develop a thicker skin. But when I read these comments, they make me sad. I went back and read the original article and it appears that this desk was done, for a client, by the person who wrote the post. Perhaps the client requested a painted desk. Maybe she wanted the "Pottery Barn" look. Maybe she likes distressed furniture and maybe the client said, "please paint for me an old desk, sort of Pottery barn-ish that is kind of distressed." In a time when many of my friends have lost their jobs, I admire someone who is creating something and making an income. I noticed that very few people have gone to HER blog to leave critical comments so I guess most of these comments are for the benefit of other AT readers? I guess I just wish people would remember that maybe she was proud of her work and very excited that a Site like Apartment Therapy picked up her story. Some of the comments that are critical are written from a good place, politely and almost to just show her the other options, but I find some of them unnecessarily cruel. If the objective is to have her "see the light" regarding preserving the natural beauty of old wood..maybe those words could be chosen better.

I like this space...the books look cleaner and I happen to like them organized by color...it's fun...no harm done...sumo guy is I guess an acquired taste, and it does not have to be mine as this is not my home. ..I admire the Novogratz's and think they are an amazing family..7 great kids and creative parents who have their heart in the right place, even if they miss a few...the home owner is happy, and to me, that is all that matters.

Our house is 130 years old and I would give anything to know what it looked like...way back when, what a wonderful article....about a beautiful home.

It does not show well in the photos, but the beds, when I got them were already painted, Avocado Green, on all the headboards and footboards posts and the strips of wood across them. The fabric on the headboard when I flipped it over was a soft pale green but on the outside looked deep gold, probably from all the smoking done in bed. We have lived in an 130 year old house for 8 years with an avocado oven, because we cannot afford a new one. My whole life and my blog is about respecting things that are old and preserving their inherent beauty. I could not do avocado green in my daughters room, or really anywhere. She needed beds. I painted them.

The fabric is a Premier Print called "Suzani" in CORN Slub and I got it at fabric.com for $8.48. I like the Premier prints, especially with kids, because they are a nice quality, fun prints, there is a color for everyone and most important...affordable, so when we change our minds...and we do...we have not spent an arm and a leg on fabric. I like too that in some colors you can also get different types of fabric, so for instance, the pink Suzani shams I made are just a cotton sheeting weight fabric , but the headboard is a heavier linen cotton. Thanks for All of the comments!

My father , who is wheel chair bound, has this table... and it enables him to have the table come to his height...and because it is difficult for him to pick things up he can keep the remote and his books right inside...it has changed his days dramatically...

Thank you for all of the Thoughtful and heartfelt comments above. Wow, I was so excited to see my beds and my work and my home on Apartment Therapy but now I am feeling sort of crappy for painting the beds...oh well, I too have restored furniture my Mom painted, I guess maybe this will be a great restoration project for when the kids are gone I am an empty nester. I had NO idea about the taffeta...OMG I would have given it to the antique store down the street...Next time, if there is one, I will make sure to do a bit more homework. I was just so excited to have "new" beds for my daughter who is 14 and has been sleeping in our broken IKEA bed that I just did what I do.... I made it work for us!

I LOVE all the possibilities, I do, but as a color Addict and someone who has done and redone and then done over color...I think, "Refined" will be the best (esp with wallpaper) and even if you never add wallpaper, you will tie of the others....HOWEVER..having used "Refined" for all the reasons you state..and I do love it ...I would like to suggest another color...similar to it, also Benjamin MooreM- but a shade MORE personality and less brownish .."maritime white"..check it out...and the choice .."Spring in Aspen" also BM

I did not watch the Oprah show with much regularity, but happened to catch a few of her last few episodes. One revelation she shared was when she said something to the effect that after all her decades of interviews and after having met hundreds of people from every walk of life, the most famous to the most disenfranchised ..from Nelson Mandela to the guy on death row...there was ONE Consistent TRUTH , and only one that she said EVERYONE on Earth shares and that ....is the desire to be validated. To have had their time on Earth have meant something.
Personally, I think there is a direct correlation between how technological we become, and how intense the desires to connect become. It seems like the further we get from intimacy in our communication physically, we text to the person in the next room....the MORE intimate our far reaching internet communication gets. But thats just me.

I could talk color for a week straight and it gives me immense pleasure to have found, through blogging a world of folks, like me..and you. As an artist, I am ALL about the relationship between ART and wall color...because the wall color cannot help but become interactive with the ART, one feeds off the other, is enhanced by or diminished by, the other...what is that science term called? oh yeah...like a symbiotic relationship!!!....

4 Things To Consider When Picking A Wall Color

I live in a town of 300, flanked by a town of 2000 and all wrapped up in a town of about 90,000. so small. I struggled at first...really hated it, felt like, after living in NYC and Boston, that I was living my worst nightmare, cut off from the world. Then slowly, I let go of my fixation on (my perception not necessarily the truth as I found out) lack of culture and the bad clothes and horrible haircuts and got to know the people...and I fell in love. Stripped of all the culture and the style and the trends...oblivious to what was in or out (this is pre internet and I do wonder if it is different now) these people were just a rich and interesting and amazing as anyone I met in any big city. They were so down to earth and I found that refreshing. I will always miss cities. and I have told my kids that my plan is to retire in NYC, but I love that this is where they are growing up. And where I am growing into myself.

Anyone that has seen my living room knows I have no problem with a little pink...
BUT, PINK to me is like the "sweetness" it evokes...it must be balanced with more "savory" items, industrial chic accessories, natural wood and other materials, it CAN be done, but BALANCE is the name of the game.

I am actually going to do all white kitchenaid appliances, with a stainless steel farm sink and stainless range hood - white cabinets and slate floor. Maybe butcher block counters to warm it up a bit (and save $$$) I think they look very cool and retro and sleek and frankly I am tired of stainless, they used to denote high end, now they are just too much everywhere..the thrill si gone! I am excited for my white!
