I wonder what the people who are up in arms about Barbie think about other problems in our society. Seems there's a bunch of alternative crises to devote time and energy to...

I've done the same thing- one a year, plus special big trips. I'm about to (photos loaded, just need to add captions) create a book for each of my kids "First 10 years" and "First 5 years" so that they have their own books with top photos of themselves and family from each existing 'best of' kind of album.

I think this is great. Creative, different...and a nice addition to a rather nice bathroom (my own has green and black tile from the 1930s, so that's my 'standard). As for a waste of money...I think that phrase fits best when referencing McMansions.

Good post. I just moved into a new apartment today. The prior tenants were, by all accounts, pigs. Plus, they spilled ink and bleach (or tried cleaning with bleach) all over the wall to wall carpet in one bathroom. The super told me he knew all about it when I told him that I thought it should be marked, but now I'm going to go take photos before furniture gets moved into place, just in case when I leave it's a new super who doesn't believe me saying "it wasn't me!" I'll send them to the rental management company and the super, just so we're all on the same page...Other than that, it's a great building in a great neighborhood, so...fingers crossed.

I have a storage unit with stuff I haven't seen in over 4 years, plus all the bags I had sent to my mothers in the course of my relocation from overseas. I move in to my new place this weekend and CAN NOT WAIT! I'm completely in nesting mode, only it's frustrating to have the time now to go to stores, but at the same time, have no clue as to what will prove missing when the unpacking is done! Timely article. Thanks!

It appears from the photo that you could lose the nightstand on the left, thus centering the bed under the window, and have storage along the wall on the right- low or varying heights to make better use of that wall. cool room!

Perfect timing on this post! I'm about to move into a similar situation, and have been debating putting my nice Moroccan rugs on top. I'll do it, even though I KNOW that there are wood floors underneath that would make me so much happier!

I kind of like this, although I'm not a prints person in any form. On either side appears to be a boring apartment building, so I would think it's a nice break to neighborhood blah...it's also well done and well tended, which makes a difference. My nightmare neighborhood is the one from the opening scene from Poltergeist.

Oh dear, that daybed and patio space...was that created after Minh went back to work after his 2 month sabbatical? I'm wondering because, had I created a space like that , I think I would have found a way to be a permanent 'stay at home.' Wonderful home- if I had to live in California again, this would be the style- and some very cool pieces.

I'm moving to an apartment in the US sight unseen...trusted my mother with the selection. She referred to the bathroom tile as 'god-awful green tile with black tile trim,' but I'm kind of excited about it. Yes, it means white and grey towels and shower curtain, but I tend to go that route anyway...

We had a little home like this that we painted a nice buttery yellow with white trim. Door was a periwinkle blue. i loved the idea..but after a short while, it looked more and more like the home of a little old lady. So, if you go the yellow route, I'd do something fun and unusual with the front door (and second on the hedge removal). After all, you could paint the door every few years for change of pace without breaking your back or your bank as you would repainting the house red or another deep color...

I have that copy of Marie Claire Maison. I don't think the stairwell is photoshopped at all...her whole house is like this. It's beautifully done. Not my style, but she's done an excellent job with her style.

My cat will walk up to the elementary school to visit my daughter at recess. Sometimes, if there are no dogs on our route, she'll walk me partway to work after my lunch break. I'll miss her when we move back to the USA, but my last cat was traumatized by a disastrous flight cross country, and I'd rather not go through that with this kitty. Instead, she's been invited to go live with my boyfriend's ex mother in law here in France. She'll have a huge garden with lots of field mice and lizards to catch. And she'll still be loved...

This was such a great post! I'm USA bound after a few years abroad, and am thinking of squeezing myself and my two kids into a 800 square foot 2 bedroom. Love floor to ceiling bookcases, and closet shelving units are likely the way to go. Love this site for advice.
