Altbau means old building. Generally it means a building was built before 1948. A funny description I found: Architects consider Altbau houses any building that causes many problems updating and always cost more than you think.
Typical for these houses are masonry walls, wood-beamed ceilings, high ceilings, old wooden floors, stucco, single or double casement windows. Also they often have small maids rooms next to the kitchen. They where very small, often cold and conditions where not so good for those pore maids.
Generally these old buildings had many small rooms dedicated to different purposes like a reading room, a ladies room, a sitting room, a formal sitting room and so on. My mothers house is not that large and had 7 rooms just on the ground floor.

How can you get one? Move to Berlin or another European country like the Netherlands or Great Britain and buy one :).

Wow so many negative comments. Has anybody considered that this condo actually belongs to the parents of Ann and so the in-laws of Dabney? And like Dabney says in a previous post: "I definitely have a harder edge to my aesthetic, but I'm *trying* to temper my vintage industrial modern ways in favor of something softer. I want the in-laws to feel comfortable, without sacrificing my desire to do something fun. This is a difficult balance."
And maybe the parents don't want to live with that 30 year old kitchen any more? And they love the gold knobs? And they especially like the backsplash? And I'm sure once the whole condo is redone and they are going to actually live in it they will add their personal touches which will make it a home to them (and probably will not to be to the taste of many of us but who cares!).
Has anyone taken a look at Ann's & Dabney's own house? (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/house-tour-16-109399) and read the other articles about this renovation?
So maybe this renovation is not in the style of many of the critics but I'm sure Ann's parents love their new place and are going have a fantastic time during their winters down south. (oh and where is the "wallpaper" that some comments are talking about?)

Dabney and Ann please share the picture's of the rest of the condo with us. I love the mood board you showed in the 03.29.12 article.

Eva.

We have two 13 year old boys share a well tiny room. We have bunk beds now. Very similar to the one in picture 8. We have one big problem. The squeaking! Especially from the top bed. We now have to let one of the boys sleep on the ground (on a mattress of course!). Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this problem? Maybe some bunk beds are better than others? Maybe the Ikea ones?

Love it! Amazing how while painting cabinets a bold black the kitchen still looks so country and cosy. And for under $500! That inspires me to do something about my own drab kitchen.
