May I also add (as a professional framer) that mat dimensions are important for achieving a balanced look. Ideally, the mat should be an even width on all sides and at least a half inch wider than the width of the frame. Weighted bottom mats (top and sides are even, bottom width is larger) are an alternative choice. This technique draws attention to the piece and gives it a sophisticated look.
