Advice from a librarian - NEVER laminate things that you want to save archivally. It can yellow the paper underneath, and most importantly it is very difficult and very expensive to reverse. There is a lot of information online about how to preserve personal collections or archives. You might want to limit to .gov sites as you search. One example is: http://www.seattle.gov/cityarchives/Exhibits/preservation.htm

Good luck!

We had the no-call back problem with electricians - people who had been recommended to us by friends. It makes you wonder how they stay in business. We were super happy when we found someone who called us back, for a decent price, that would listen to us, and could complete the project in a day. Even the person we chose would go on vacation then call us back a week later. Why is it so hard to put an away message on your machine? RM http://suburbiahappens.blogspot.com/

We don't used canned anymore because of BPA concerns (see this Prevention article):

We buy boxed or use fresh when in season.

We made this casserole yesterday. You can see a pic at:

It was the best casserole we have had in a long time. It was moist and flavorful and just awesome. Even my husband like it, and he doesn't like chickpeas.

You can do it! I am excited to see the journey and hopefully get some ideas for our place. I do see now why your reno is going to go so much quicker than ours. . .I would guess that it's the budget and the contractor. We will end up spending that much and more probably, but we do not have it all at once:

In regards to the soffit, I knocked a big hole in ours and there was nothing there, or so we thought. Then we removed the whole thing and found pipes. It would be over $1200 to move them, so they are staying, as is a small piece of the soffit. So my advice is make sure you know what is under there before you knock it down.

Good luck!!

I love this! I would not have added the orange, but I love the idea, and it seems easy/cheap to fix if one gets damaged. We desperately need to do something to our stairs:

Time-warp - but I am kind of digging the dining room bamboo chairs! Keep those if you can.

I feel your pain. We bought our built in 1977 townhouse in 2010, and it had basically not been touched since the day the couple moved in there - orange shag carpet and all. You can see at: http://suburbiahappens.blogspot.com/

They moved in, did not touch a thing (but kept it very clean) and then moved into a retirement home. It has taken us 2 years to start to see a difference. I am excited to see what you can do in a few weeks!

I want to try an estate sale or an auction, but I am kind of terrified. I think my preference would be to start at one that is at a warehouse - like a whole bunch of estates in one.

I have read that hand washing actually uses more water. Anyone know if that is true? My husband is the chillest person in the world. . .except that he rearranges the dishwasher after I have loaded it. . .pretty much every time. RM

At camp we used to make pizzas in them - a little marinara, some mozzarella cheese, and whatever toppings you want. Just stick it in the bread and you have a yummy campfire pizza! Plus, it seems like everything tastes better outdoors.

The kitchen is nice, but I am not a fan of the bedroom with the yellow bedspread, and the yellow and blue couch with the aqua-ish walls. It looks too 1990s for my taste.

Slipcovers are the way to go! That way if a muddy pooch sits on the sofa, you can just wash the part that is dirty. We have a slip covered couch from IKEA.
