Oh, and for people with kids... why not get their "help" while you are cleaning? What kid doesn't love to "dust" with a real feather-duster?? Or "wipe" the front of the kitchen cabinets for you with a dry cloth? I have a friend whose toddler gets upset if she doesn't let him "vacuum" when she is cleaning. It's only 20 minutes of keeping your kid entertained by your side, and it will set them up with GREAT habits for the rest of their lives.

How To Clean Your House in 20 Minutes a Day for 30 Days

there is a wicked iPhone app called "HomeRoutine" that lets you program in this list (or your own version), including daily, weekly, monthly tasks. It will send you reminders if you turn notifications on, and it has a timer built in that you can adjust the duration of. It is GREAT. (no, I don't work for the developer... lol)

My mantra when it comes to chores is... "You can do anything for 20 minutes!"... as in - I know this seems really overwhelming, and the last thing you want to do is get your butt off the couch and go do it... but it's just for 20 minutes, and then you can come back and be a vegetable again for as long as you want! I ALWAYS set my timer when I'm going to do any kind of chore or dreaded task, and then I play a game with myself to "beat the clock"... it is AMAZING what you can get done in that amount of time if you are actually focused and not wasting any energy. Even on things I've been putting off for weeks, I will find that I finish and am looking for more things to clean for the last few minutes of the time. Even better, usually I am so impressed with myself for getting that thing done so quickly, that I set the timer again right away and tackle something else - it is amazing how motivating small victories can be!!

Great list... Thanks!!

GREAT post! Thanks!!
I'm a designer, and it has always been hard for me to "choose a style" for my own space, because I love elements of EVERY style! I am equally drawn to modern, clean, minimalist spaces and opulent, broken-in, traditional ones... Do I love something a bit earthy and eclectic, or something slick and techy? Roller shades or swagged velvet??
I have finally gotten some guts at home, and begun to incorporate ALL those elements into a unique and quirky space that truly represents my hubby and I. I discovered there ARE ways for my books, alpaca wool throws, and eames chairs to play off against his dutch family heirlooms, action figures, and home-made tv stand (yes, those are all ACTUAL things in our living room right now) in a way that is both visually appealing and makes us both feel at home in our space!
I agree wholeheartedly with the advice to use magazines, Pinterest, and AT to gather ideas and inspiration, but then to suck up the courage to step back and "forget" all that you've learned, and just honour all the things in your life that you love and that make you feel like YOU!

Oh, and I should have mentioned, black powder room has no window.

Darkly Chic: Black Walls in Any Room

I have a black powder room and I LOVE it. It doesn't look cavelike... it looks moody and dramatic. Because the ceiling is still white, and the floors, vanity, and fixtures are light, it doesn't overwhelm the space. We use warm lighting, not too bright, and decorated with brightly coloured towels (orange, currently), soaps (lime) and black and white photography in stainless steel frames. It looks GREAT (if I do say so myself)!

Even better if you add the height extensions, which take you right to the ceiling (with just enough room for a beefy crown molding) for an even more built-in look. I just did the same thing in my living room. :D

Build-In Your Billys for an Inexpensive & Custom Look
Centsational Girl

My name is Natalie and I am an addict!

I have learned over the years to keep my investment pieces neutral (gray sofa, charcoal carpet, white drapes, natural wood & white furniture, wood floors) so that I can completely change the room by moving around accessories and changing a few toss cushion covers.
I also have my whole place painted a nice warm neutral that goes with everything, and I have a few accent walls that I can easily change with a quart of paint when I'm ready for a refresh.

My most recent upgrade was a whole wall of "built-in" bookshelves (DIY on the cheap with IKEA Billy shelves and crown molding - looks like a million bucks!). Now I can change my whole living room just by rearranging my books and objects! :)

I also get secretly excited when something wears out or breaks, because it means time for a new look!! My husband has (jokingly) accused me of breaking zippers on duvet covers on purpose... he may be onto something......

Are You a Decorating Addict?

it makes me sad that there are people who DON'T leave other peoples' places clean when they leave them... lol... to me it just seems like a given! Even when we rent a private vacation property where I'm sure there's some expectation of guests leaving a mess, I still spiff it up at least aesthetically before we leave - tidy up, wipe down all the surfaces, do the dishes, etc... I could never leave anything other than a hotel room (or my own bedroom) looking like a bomb went off... seems so rude and disrespectful.

The flooring in #1 is likely carpet.
I love the oranges in #6 and #8... so rich and sophisticated. A really great alternative to red!

It is the right link, just the wrong pattern/colour-way of that collection comes up when you click it. You have to scroll through the collection below the image to find it, and the thumbnail is a bit deceiving - looks like shades of gray with a tiny triangle of green in the corner. When you click it, the large preview image is the colourful "Circus" print!

So fun! Would never have thought of this either, but what a great idea... I have some cushions that go on my outdoor sofa, and I have been tossing around the idea of buying some really expensive outdoor fabric to re-make them in a fun pattern (they are a natural canvas colour now)... maybe I will buy some cheap fabric paints instead, and see what I can come up with! At the very least it will get me through one more season before shelling out for new ones!

Pajamas, hours upon hours of TV and movies, and crackers and cheese for dinner.

Pathetically, I have only been alone overnight a handful of times in my entire life!! I went from my parents/siblings, to boarding school roommates, to living with my boyfriend, to marrying him!

No wonder I am at such a loss when it happens...

isn't daily exposure to these kinds of bacteria what builds a strong immune system though? Don't get me wrong, I wash my hands, and I clean my keyboard periodically.... but over-sanitizing our environment is what causes us to get MORE sick when we DO inevitably encounter those every-day germs.

I had to think about that one for a minute, before realizing that the 90s are not, in fact, the last decade... we ARE old!!!

I'd like to add:
You're still driving your first car, and it has not an ipod dock, not a CD changer, but a tape deck... and you still use it to play mix tapes.

and/or

You remember making mix tapes... hovering in front of the double tape deck of your stereo, pressing play and record at just the right moments to catch your favorite track.

My hubby and I joke all the time about how you're supposed to tell if the sour cream has soured... ;)

We are definitely a "sniff test" kind of family. The only thing I'm a little cautious of is cooked food - if I've got leftovers in the fridge and they still look and smell OK, but they've been there longer than 4-5 days, I usually toss them - you just never know when you've combined a bunch of ingredients and they've been exposed to the air for any length of time.

I've certainly been known to cut around the mold on cheese and bread though (you know how they make cheese, right? It's basically ALL mold)...

I didn't know the egg floating trick, I've always had to crack one to find out if they're OK - will definitely be using that one!!

I agree with the poster who said that the types of bacteria in food that will make you sick, are not affected by how long it has been sealed in your fridge, but by what it has been exposed to. I've never had food poisoning, and I've eaten mayonnaise that was expired AND sat on the counter overnight. I try to think about how they eat in developing countries (has anyone been to Cuba?) and remember that our digestive systems will handle as much as we allow them to - and for a normal healthy adult, the worst you can expect is a little bit of discomfort. Bad milk is NOT going to kill you! :)

I agree with Nerves... there is something skeevy about the idea of putting food in the washing machine. Also, knowing my skills with laundry, I'd probably wash the lettuce in hot water by accident and make a big old mess!!
