"Trying" to keep a house is one the most common mistakes. I know it's giving up on the American Dream but it can be a money pit shackle. Explaining to your children what's going on as soon as it becomes apparent...Depression Era children were able to adjust. It will also be obvious what one really doesn't need. Those who have little share more than those who have tons. Our taxes pay for some diminishing social programs but we who are on the brink also give to charities that help the even less fortunate. The rich give to the opera and museums....and get a tax credit.

I'm thinking that "alliecan" is VERY attractive. They have done studies that a pretty young thin girl will have dozens of people stop to help when they are broken down on the side of the road. An overweight middle aged woman will be driven by for hours.

One needs the time to get all these services. I would walk (with a stroller and oxygen tank) 1.5 miles to receive WIC. There were only so many buses. Social Services wanted me to go home and count the change in the piggy bank and come back next week. This was 27 years ago when services were easier to get. I received a whopping $14 a month in Food Stamps because I worked. I wouldn't have made it without these services but wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy.

It does take a while to make a home...and sometimes the most creative elements come out of frugal means. Love this house. It does take a lot to dust I'm sure and they don't seem to be the type to let a little dust ruin their day...
Love the color! Stunning fabrics. There have been a few fabulous eclectic art filled homes on AT recently...I hope the responses have been favorable. More please.

If it's not raining put it out on the will be gone. There are scavengers that troll where garage sales are just for this. Go ahead vultures pick the bones clean. It's the circle of man's junk is another man's treasure.

Maybe this a very old article but...those infrared furnaces that cost "pennies a day" to operate. Like 1200 pennies a day. My electric bill was $400 in one month...okay granted I do have a refrigerator and a few lamps, but my bill is usually about $75 tops.

Am seriously thinking of refinishing my pink steel kitchen them but am sick to death of pink (like a Barbie Dream Kitchen). I see the two colors I've been thinking of here together...this will be a huge task but I am inspired.
Love the use of color.

So very nice. There seem to be a few hundred sq. feet not that where you stash the clutter? I'm always amazed at people our age with no clutter. I love the warm woods and the floors...oh oh oh love those floors.

She drink cream and sugar in her coffee? That's where many of the spoon use comes from around here....I borrow a handful of those black stir sticks from work (or Starbucks or McD).

My mother drank black coffee from the same unwashed mug at work for was well "seasoned" as she said. She worked in a hospital and had two weeks of sick days every year (plus 6 weeks vacation...nice, eh?) and never used them...I mean never. She called off sick the morning she died at age 83. It builds up your immune system...or kills you. Such is life.

Ruby Dahling ....we are now considered "vintage" are vintage at 25 years and it may be the same for furniture. UGH that stuff from the 80s will be the hipster's rage any day now.

I had a delicious jar of Bavarian Sauerkraut that I just couldn't open - no way/ no how- that jar opener was the best thing I ever bought. But I'm older and have a problem with tendonitis in my wrist. I am paring down my knives to the ones I use though. We had one "sandwich" knife that came in the set that we used for everything...never found another one like it...had many that looked like it. My ex has it now...although it did belong to his mother.

Nice job...looks great. Also never overlook just the guts of an ugly useless lamp. The switches, wire and sockets can get pricey to rewire lamps...

Ah a kindred spirit. I really love that you've collected beautiful pieces and kept them as is...flaws and all add to their character. I like the pink bathroom...the tile work was done by a long gone've done a very nice job of accessorizing it. I have few store bought accessories...mostly gifts from friends... mostly in what AT calls the "outbox". Charming place...stay poor and creative... travel.
