No cable here for the last 8 years. Once you make it thru the initial "detox" phase, you'll wonder how you ever had time to watch tv in the first place. We do Netflix, mainly and some Hulu, and still only when we have the time... Minimal really. Watching regular broadcast television is so jarring... Commercials and reality shows just seem so obnoxious. The only thing we (family) is really missing is the Olympics. Personally I prefer reading the news, including transcripts of speeches, etc. sans the emphasis and emotional delivery. Much easier to zero in on fallacies and get to the meat of thing IMHO.

My children are now teenagers, but we have always eaten dinner together. For those of you that have little ones, I sympathize with you - it is a trick to cook and entertain small children. I would put on a cooking show called "mommy's kitchen" and explain each step and let the kids sample ingredients and help a bit. It was quite silly, but they enjoyed it and looked forward to it. We were also pretty flexible about dinner time, just to preserve the act of sitting down and sharing a meal together. Even when our schedule was crazy, we would still sit down for a meal, and anyone missing would help themselves when they got home. It's the time we sit and connect with each other - and I love that time. We currently eat a bit late (my kids are also older) to include my husband. We still eat together most days - which is pretty cool when your teens look forward to meal time together.

I searched for the "perfect" choc chip cookie recipe for years, literally. i agree with miabica - the america's test kitchen/cooks illustrated recipe is my all time fav - we have a family of 6, so the batch is always wiped out the same afternoon. I also use guittard, or ghiradelli 60%. i've never tried refrigerating the dough... i'd like to give that a try.

This is why I buy my honey locally from this darling little old man who keeps bees as a hobby. I imagine this is easier to find depending on where you live... but localharvest.org is a good place to start. :)

identity crisis. the dessert jar is trying too hard to be a table setting. everyone loves you, dessert! just be yourself. even a cheap paper plate can't stop my eternal love for you.

I wanted to hate them and refused to use them for a long time. But, as it turns out, they're pretty rad. I use the target brand, too. They're wayyyy less gnarly than most cleaning products, so I don't worry too much about that.

didn't really have a plan before yesterday, but when the power went out, I was pleased to find ice cubes that I had in a bag still in ice cube form. phew. was dreading tossing contents of our full freezer!

simple. from scratch. butter... I always use the same basic recipe, using heavy cream, buttermilk, or greek yogurt, depending on what I have on hand. i don't really sweat it. flours and "secret ingredients" vary.
